Hi all, My truck was using standar distributor which use vacum/centrifugal advanced. I need something better, so I had installed the distributor one used on 300 EFI engines (TFI). It works fine but of course there is no electronic computer to produce SPOUT control signal to advance or delay Ignition timing.
My question is: Is there any electronic controller that can be used to control the TFI distributor? a mean; able to produce SPOUT signal to advance or delay Ignition timing?
I don't think there is a way to get it to work. You would need the computer from a EFI truck at the least. And then you would need some of the sensors if not all of them. I would stick with the original dizzy or something simailar with the vaccum advance. If you are looking to upgrade your ignition even more, try a hotter coil like the MSD blaster coil, or even the MSD 6A ignition box.
Ok. I'll keep looking for. There is a company which produce computers for EFI engines to replace stock computers, it can control inyectors, ignition, etc, but What I need is controll just ignition.
If you could find out what type of signal the TFI distributor is looking for you could probalby build your own control box without going nuts. I'm guessing it just adjusts timing based on the voltage being sent through the wire, 0 volts=0 advance, 5 volts=full advance. You would need something to vary resistance based on engine speed, and something to change reisistance based on engine load (a MAP sensor). Of course if the advance is controlled in some other way you would be wasting your time to try it this way.
Sorry but, TFIV use a square wave to control ignition timing. Ford PCM just advance or delay the trigger signal and the TFIV responce to this signal. If signal is not present, TFIV goes to a diagnose mode then no advance or delay is present.
You could get a 555 timer chip, a 1 Meg Ohm potentiometer, and a 5V regulator and make a very crude ignition control box. The 1 meg pot could be used as a TPS of sorts by attaching it to your throttle shaft ( the pot would control the amplitude of the square wave). I don't know just a thought. Might be fun to experiment with and it would be cheep (about $10 for everything). Good luck!
It looks like a drop in HEI lookalike. (1 wire hookup) I have been using Hei's for years and they are the simplest and the best for a vacuum advance unit. We have run them for over 10 years on some trucks without any problems. You can use advance kits to super tune them etc. Dig around on the web and I'm sure you can find this cheaper. See if someone like Accel makes one.
As for the Megasquirt; it has to control both the ign timing and the fuel injectors as it picks the "best" option ( power or lo/no pollution) for the map it has programed into it. some engines can also add variable valve timing and or boost to the equation.
search for the timing circuits for an 1986 with the 300 as this was still carbed but equipped with thin film coil and electronic ignition, I believe it was called the TFI IV.
(Sorry, it was called EEC-IV.) I think you'll need the control module as I believe this will advance the timing.
