ignition timing+aftermarket cam?

Does anyone or has anyone run say, a comp cams 260H or 268H in their 400? If so I am curious as to what the initial timing is set at when idling @800rpm. Please help A.S.A.P.!!

ignition timing+aftermarket cam?

I am running the 260H. I am running headers and a holley 750 double-pumper. I recently installed MSD ignition hot box and dist. Then I set the initial timing at 600rpms at 22deg. BTC. I set the springs in the dist. for maximum advance as quick as possible (approx 43deg. total advance). Seems like a lot but the engine came alive. I give most 460's a run for their money and some get more than they bargained for.:-staun

Thank you!! I am glad to see I'm not the only one who gets these kind of timing readings. Much appreciated!

One more question;(I should know the answer but my memory has been suckin' lately) Are you setting the initial advance@600rpm with or without the vacumm on the distributor? Also, what springs are you using in your MSD dist mech advance? Did you/how do you(if needed) change the advance stop bushing? Okay, maybe that was more than one question. Help would be much appreciated.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Jun-02 AT 09:28 PM (EST)]The dist. is mechanical advance only, no vacuum to worry about. I used the lightest springs possible and kept the bushing that came in the dist. I don't remember which color it is but I can look. The springs are light silver. The dist. comes with very good instructions on changing springs and bushings and which ones you will want to try. I read somewhere else that the 400 liked advance early and in quantity and that is how I decided to start where I did. The way I set the timing was to adjust the dist. until the truck idled the highest. It had previously been set at about 800rpm's. When the truck idled the highest, I idled it down to about 600rpm's and checked the timing. It was at about 18BTC. I then bumped it up a couple degrees and started testing.
