i have my stock 1976 distributor for my 460, whats the best option to go with for an upgrade? i looked for this answer on the forums but im new and it seems older stuff is really hard to find
Do you currently have points or durasprark distributor?
Im a big fan of the magnetic pickup duraspark distributor with a MSD capacitive discharge ignition box. The MSD (or other manufactures) can process the magnetic pickup inside the distributor in the same way the factory Ford ignition box does but outputs more power to the coil and plugs
That said for a stock engine the duraspark ignition is a very good ignition system.
lots of guys run a DUI distributor which is a GM design distributor with a Ford base. These are simple and easy as the ignition module and coil are all within the distributor. I’m not a fan of these but they do work... not sure it’s an upgrade to the stock system though.
If you already have factory Duraspark distributor and mostly stock engine I don't think there is much to upgrade to.
There are brand new factory distributors available cheap but the ones made by Spectra are not good. The cap retaining clips are so weak the cap is loose and the wiring connector is so brittle it will break on first connection. Ask me how I know.
Thank you for that information. This is one of those trucks that has sat for 20 years, I got it running but its rough so I figured I would start with ignition
I'm thinking its duraspark I'm attaching a picture
Yup that’s duraspark. I’d start with a general tune-up and while you have the spark plugs out do a compression test and maybe a leak down test. If your compression is good then you can start looking for other issues than the long block.
Bout the only upgrade would be to speed up the timing curve(somewhat de-smog) by installing looser springs in that distributor. Throw a straight up timing set while in there for best bang for buck. From studying the photo above I would check for vacuum leaks also. I see there is a Holley on there, might be as simple as a blown power valve if its rough running/black smoke at idle.
