Rear E-brake cable replacement

This weekends project is to replace the rear e brake cables. My service manual is waiting to check out in my Rockauto cart…

Removing the drum, it looks like I should just remove the axle shaft and the drum should pull straight of right? Do I need to pull the whole bearing assembly?

Youtube videos and google show me later models than my 1965 F250. Does anyone have a picture or video or instructions on this? I want to go in fully prepared.

A 1965 F250 should have the 12 1/8" x 2" drums. To remove the drum you shouldn't need to pull the axle or get into any bearings inside. Just remove the wheel (8 lugs each) and then the drum should have 3 larger head slotted screws to remove and then the drum comes off after backing off of the adjustment enough the drum isn't held on by the shoes. The 3 screws aren't required but just held the drum on at the factory so it didn't fall off as they moved it around. So if the 3 screws are missing it's generally no problem and the drum should only be held on by the wheel in that case. Sometimes heat is needed for the rear drums to come off but that can vary.

Some info here. If your truck were a 1966 F250 2WD with the 12" x 2 1/2" brakes then you do have to remove the rear axle since the hub and drum are one piece. For 1965 F250 I'd expect a separate hub and drum.

The rear drums and hubs are separated on my 65 F250.

I just replaced the rear drums, shoes, etc. and my front parking brake cable on my 1965 F100 and the rear cables should be replaceable without taking off the axle. The 250 was different of course so your mileage may vary.

You'd have to remove the brake drum at a minimum, but that's not built into the wheel hub like on the front, so that's no big deal.

You'll also likely have to remove at least one of the brake shoes to get enough room to get the cable in there, as well as to attach it to the parking brake plate. It's a good time to check on the condition of your brakes.

The cables go into the backing plate if I recall correctly. I think they are routed over the axles and have brackets holding them in place that attach to the frame. And then, of course, they hook into the equalizer bar.

There are nuts on the equalizer bar that can be turned to increase or decrease tension on the cables. Giving the cables some slack should let you remove them.

Thanks for all the replies. Got the drums off easier than expected.

Now the problem is that on the right rear the spreader bar is missing and the arm that engages the parking brake is missing. Where can those be located? I have given a cursory search but haven’t found em yet to buy. I don’t need original, I just need functionality.

I don't recall if you mentioned if your truck is 2WD or 4WD, but I think C1TT-2A642-A is the part number for the left side spreader and C1TT-2A642-B is the number for the right side. I think that covers the 1961 - 1965 F250, both 2WD and 4WD. I could be mistaken -- I do not have an F250 and never did. Could also be C1TZ-2A642-A and C1TZ-2A642-B.

Looks different from the F100 version based on a few images I found.

I'm unsure of the part number for the parking brake arm (the part that actually connects to the cable) unfortunately, or how universal that might be

Found the strut/bar at NOS parts. Now looking for the actuator/lever part number b7tz-2A637-a. Will also need springs for the strut bar. I bet those will be unavailable to……
