Temp Gage Issue

Since I don't have my truck yet, I can't check anything you may have me check.
The heat gage goes immediately to hot and stays there until the key is off. I'm trying to pre-order the correct part (s) so I can install upon arrival next week. I know it could also just be a short too. I am prepared to order both a gage and sending unit and just take care of it all. Thoughts?

If it is your intention to keep the truck original then buy them both, having spares is always good

Your post didn’t say what engine you have. In my 48 with a flatty v8, there are 2 sending units and I believe they are not the same. One side reports temperature and the other only reports overheating. Also, with no power the gauge rests at hot, goes down to 0 when power is applied.

All that said, I eliminated the stock gauge in favor of 2 after market mechanical gauges. I installed them under the dash so they can be removed if I change my mind.

I had the exact same problem crop up on me two weeks ago, bought the 2 sensors and the gauge figuring its got to be one or the other maybe both, and it was fixed just today. Since my truck was rewired recently I thought it might have been some kind of short that developed, the shop that did the work tested continuity from one sending unit back to the gauge and that checked out ok. I had two new reproduction temp sensors I bought from Chucks Trucks put in and that solved the problem. Although the problem may have been from the cross over wire's connection as well. Lost about a pint of coolant. Use a thread sealant that doesn't interfere with the connection. I was told not to use teflon tape on the brass temp sensors as that could interfere with the signal. I also had the transmission and rear diff oil changed since that was from the previous owner.

Hi Tom! You could have either a defective excessive heat unit switch for the temp gauge in the left head or an open, missing or wrong connection between the temperature gauge to the excessive heat sensor (or switch if you will) in the left head.
Check out the link below and study Ross's post #3 and #8. There is a lot of great information there.

Temp gage issue

Thanks to all that replied.
I do have the v8 so after much internet searching and one member suggesting I buy new and keep the old just in case. I ordered one of each sending unit today and should arrive about the same time as the truck.
Thanks to all,
Tom

Hey Tom,
It's been a long time since we replaced our temp sender in our '50.
I seem to remember that it had some sort of liquid/oil in the line -
not what I was expecting. Maybe your set up is different - just wanted to
give you the heads up.
