temp. problems

1994 f-150 5.0L Auto Trans 4x2

When I bought the truck 6 months ago, I assumed it had no thermostat in it. The OEM Temp. guage came up to the "C", below normal, and stayed right around there. Sometimes on a really hot day, it would come up to just below the N in "NORMAL".

So Sunday I decided to put a thermostat in. I took it all apart, and discovered there was one in it that was working properly. It was a 192 degree, and I replaced it with a 192 degree. Started up the truck and drove it for a couple days, still the same temp. reading, so I'm assuming that the temp. guage or a sensor is bad some where.
Any ideas on what to replace and where to get it?

Also, any ideas on a custom guage set up along the (I wanna say the A-Pillar, not sure, but the part that goes from the roof to the dash) that would include the temp, oil pressure, and ... ?

Pretty simple to check if indicator or sending unit. This takes two people cause it happens fast!!! Unplug the wire from the sending unit and with ignition on(don't start) ground the wire with a pig tail. Have your assistant watch the temp indicator on the dash. If it moves to hot, the indicator is good and the sending unit is bad. Not likely the indicator is bad. I just replaced my sending unit for eratic readings. Also make sure you got the right unit. The coolant temperature sending unit only has one wire hooked to it. Hope this helps you! 'Mo

Mine is a '93 5L so I assume it's in the same place on yours. From the front of the engine looking aft its to the right of the dist. back near the left cylinder head. It has one wire hooked to it. It's screwed into the block. I had to use a long reach needle nose to pull the wire off due to interference with harness ect.. When I changed mine I used a piece of a gun cleaning rod screwed onto the temp sender to get between the harness and wires when installing the new one. Also, teflon tape the new one if you change it!! 'Mo
