That in itself is scary, LOL. I am thinking of putting a 351 windsor into my '50 F-1 and wondering if the rear end can take the torque?
Has anyone put one in this type of vehicle and what problems did you have? I have removes the rear end cover and cleaned it to the best of my ability and everything looks good.
Wouldn't the oem gears be around 4:88 in the back, thing would bunny hop when you stomp on the gas.
An F1 would have a Dana 41 or 44 with most likely 3.92 gears, but also possible to be 3.73's or 4.11's. Either way, she'll be taching out pretty high on the highway, and the 351 would appreciate 3.00's or 3.25's much better. That's the biggest reason why most guys will swap in a F100 9". They're cheap and plentiful (or were), it bolts in and typically has those gears already in it. The 4.88's would more likely be found in an F2.
I drove my 49 F-1 for a number of years with a 56 Nailhead Buick thru the stock rear without issue. If you pair the 351 with an AOD or OD manual Trans and avoid beating on it I believe that you will be fine and happy with highway RPM.
Hmmm... We have a 50 F1 with a 351 Windsor. If you are going to go through
the work needed to put in a new engine Ynot put in a solid transmission & rear end to go with it.
The rear end install is at most a weekend's effort. We went with a salvage yard Explorer 8.8 with 3.73 gearing, limited slip
diff. & disc brakes. It's a smooth highway cruisier mated up to an AOD transmisson.
The original rear end has a pretty restrictive gear set - pretty high rpm's at highway speeds.
Good luck over there in Arkansas - you'll enjoy the Windsor.
I've had a 302 in mine for years, with an OD trans and the original rear I could cruise down the highway okay, but I snapped an axle a few years in and swapped out the rear end for a 9" that the seller said was out of a 63 F100. 3.25 gears made highway cruising super easy and the swap was a bolt up affair. Totally worth the work, especially if you're already swapping out the engine and trans.
