I have a 74 f100 with a 66 Mercury 390 that I believe came out of a car. I went to drain the oil and found that the drain plug was on the right side of the sump and facing the crossmember. If I'm not mistaken, I believe that the oil pan for a truck has the drain at the rear of the sump. Every oil pan I find online for an fe has the side drain. Any suggestions?
I have a 73 F250 with a 390 and the plug is on the driver's side, but almost at the rear corner of the side of the pan. the cross member is directly below it.
I'm wondering if the pan you have could be modified by adding another drain plug at a more convenient location.
Not reliably (read: without pan removal). Either a nut has to be welded on the outside or a nut or plate has to be welded on the inside to give any kind of thread engagement in the tin.
I had the exact same issue with one of mine (car pan in a '73 2wd). The crossmember has a hole in it (thanks to a blue-tipped wrench) where the plug was and it was nothing to snake the socket and extensions between the i-beams to get to it after that. Obviously, it made a mess while draining - but it's a Ford so it's normal.

I pulled a 460 out of a dentside in the wrecking yard a year or two ago and found the same thing. Car pan and someone cut out a hole for the plug rather than source the correct pan.
I had the engine out at this point, but this is the front 2wd crossmember and you can see the hole. lol. Whatever works I guess.
Since the owner was considering changing the pan, removal would be needed anyway. I've brazed a "bung" on pans before (including transmission pans) and got the drain in a good location to make draining more pleasant.
