In need of 49 replacement tailgate help

I'm looking for a tailgate for my 49, but have come across a really good 52 year model one.

Can anyone tell me exactly what are the differences and whether its feasible to fit (with maybe some minor mods)

Or if anyone has one within travel distance of SC, that would be great.

Thanks for any help.

I think the main difference is where the latch points are at on the upper roll of the tailgate.
I think the earlier tailgates have the latch piece inside the roll, on the late ones below the roll. I'll see if I can find a pic. If you look at one of the companies that reproduces them they typically show the difference.

Thanks so much for the quick response and info. In looking at the detail pic it looks like a 48-50 even tho the owner says it came of a 52, do you agree??

Latches are inserted in top rail - is this a 48-50??

yes, that is the early type tailgate. If you have the early raised panel box, this is your gate. If it's reasonably priced, grab it. That looks like a nice gate.

Is this information for all models or just for F1?

It's just for F1's, which corresponds with the bed style change in late '50 from raised panel to flat bed sides.
The beds never changed from 48-52 on the F2/3's so afaik there should only be one style tailgate for the bigger bed trucks.

Thanks for the clarification, I didn't see where the OP specified what model so I just wanted to be sure.

Yep, just the F1's. I think the tailgates on the bigger boxes are a little wider and a little taller.

$200 seems like a good deal on that tailgate. It looks really straight!
