rusted tailgate
at the bottom of my tail-gate. I also have to use a lot
of trickery to get the tail-gate down and the window
struggles mightely to go up and down. I have tried
looking for a replacement tail-gate, but I can't seem
to find anything for my specific year ( most replacement
tail-gates stop at 1992).
I am wondering if these earlier year tail-gates will work
on my 94 or if I need to find something from 1994.
If anyone out there knows what my best option is (rework
my current tail-gate or find a replacement) please help.
"Tailgate Swapping
Amazingly throughout the number of body style changes from '78 through '96, the tailgate remained nearly the same. You can swap tailgates between all of these years taking note of the following:
I've broken down the 3 major changes into their respective years.
78 - 79 Type A
80 - 82 Type B
83 - 96 Type C
If your swapping within the same "type" it's just a direct swap.
If swapping A & B you have to switch the glass and glass support brackets
If swapping B & C you have to switch latches and striker plates
If swapping A & C you have to switch the glass, glass support brackets, latches & striker plates. "
Whatever you end up with for a new T-gate...BEFORE you put it all back to together, either go out and get spray-on, or brush-on bedliner/undercoating and cover the INTERNAL surfaces of the new T-gate taking care not to block the drain holes. I'm talking inside the gate between inner and outer sheet metal. When the gate is closed, the seam where the outer skin and inner skin come together is LOWER than the drain holes and moisture will settle in the crevice between the two sections of metal and the rust problem is reborn in the new T-gate all over again. Covering the crevice or filling it with something that will keep moisture and the elements out will drastically increase the life expectancy of the tailgate. I had NO intention of having another gate rust away so I had the guys at Rhino-linings Rhino line the entire lower half and internal surfaces of the new gate. They took the nozzle off the sprayer and filled that crevice well enough that the coating forms a slope right down to the drain holes now. Pics in my gallery if anyone wants to see how that turned out.
Just a little preventive procedure to keep history from repeating itself. That and I hate doing a job twice.

I don't know if that's true, but if it is you can buy them a whole lot cheaper in Canada.
I paid 425 (Canadian) for my factory tailgate. It was 385 for an aftermarket unit, but I wouldn't touch any aftermarket body panel if I could help it.
This is just to let you guys south of the Canadian border know that you could pick up a factory tailgate from a Canadian dealer for about 320 US. Even if shipping cost 100 bucks....that's a whole lot cheaper than 900.

I am particularly interested in a factory replacement.
The Canadien option sounds interesting if it is possible.
I tried to find one in the US, but could not.
Any additional info. would be appreciated.
Thanks again to everyone and any other helpful
ideas for the maintaining my Bronco is welcome.
I have noticed some slight rust trying to set in
around my fenders (fender flares). I was wondering
if cutting the fenders where they are rusted and
installing aftermarket fender flares would be a
good fix or just a temporary coverup.

Unfortunately, I live in the west so I can't supply you with any dealer names that would be useful to you. You could do a search for dealers at the following link http://www.whitepages.ca/business
Select "type of business" , the Canadian province closest to you and do a search for "truck dealerships". I don't see any reason why they wouldn't ship to the US, especially if you can supply a business address.
BTW: The list price (in the west) was $585 (Cdn). The 425 that I paid was the 'repair shop' discount. ie: -20% then -10%. If you phone a couple places I'm sure you could get a similar discount.
yup the after factory gate is
