Tailgate - Replace with what?
Have a 1973 F-100 Ranger XLT.
The original tailgate looks like someone dropped a load of feed or something and bent the tailgate in the center... which made it a pain to close and open. I just took it off in 2000, and been running without anything for some time... I am now looking to replace it, but am not really interested in the replacement tailgates out there.
I am interested in replacing it with a Louvered tailgate or a mesh tailgate (not the material kind, am talking metal). All vendors that I can find do not show anything for the 1973-1979 model range. Does anyone know:
1) What years the tailgate would fit (i.e. if I find a tailgate for a 1991 truck, would it work on a 73?)??
2) Any vendors you have bought a mesh or Louvered tailgate from for your 73-79 truck? And if so, your satisfaction with it?

i was lookin at puttin a 92-96 tailgate on my 77 , and it looks to me , if you change all the mounts and stuff out it will work ....
and i have no idea about the Louvered tailgate or a mesh tailgate .... and u said u dont want a vinyl or plastic one , you can buy them net kind at autozone and advance auto i know

My girlfriend got me a fabric strap kind for Christmas. :)
Inside the box there was a slip of paper... in big letters it said... "not to be relied on to secure cargo".
Somebody please shoot me if i put something like that on my pickup ok? :/

Never purchased anything yet, but I've been scouring the web for sometime looking for a smooth weld-on center section for our tailgates..
Click on "Tailgate Weld-ons" in the left frame.. they've got a number of different louvered weld ins. You will have to get a relocator kit for the handle though, but don't despair: Mar-K also makes a relocator kit.. Only $70 too
As far as a shell goes I personally would go with Jeff's Bronco Graveyard.. I plan on purchasing all this after I get my motor rebuilt
As far as tailgates interchanging with our model year.. I know the 67-72 gates fit, but those would likely be worse off than a 73-79.. I'm not sure about any other years, but after spending some time in the junkyard, it looks as though an 80-86 should fit (87 the latches changed).. again, I'm not sure of this
