The hub lock/auto or lock/free mechanism has grease in it, not a fluid. So, I would not suspect that area as the failure point.
As FTN said, take the cover and possibly the wheel off. The on two fluids in that immediate area are the differential fluid and brake fluid. Since you have not experienced a failure in the service brakes, my primary suspect would be the differential fluid.
Other than that, you are looking at something from the engine bay, but it would have had to leak onto the axle tube or onto the hub (under the wheel) and make it's way under the cover.
Maybe a mouse got stuck in there and it is mouse **** and only requires some cleaning.
