I am certain about the air brakes, didn't want the Lucas Girling system, ironically I thought it would be easier to get parts this way.
I had considered relining but the closest place I could find is several hours away and if they get lost in the mail I've got big problems. Know of any reputable relining shops in central PA? What about cost? There is a full set of shoes for sale right now that I am considering trimming to width. (Everything is the same but they are a little wider)
I have a set of front brakes, which are non-interchangable, the backing is totally different. Keep in mind it's only a 17,000 pound axle, but I'm pretty sure these are the right shoes as they fit the drums pretty well. I found a place that apparently lines brake shoes called Lebanon Auto Parts, going to give them a call and see if that is still the case. Will advise on results.
So I found brake shoes, went to install them and discovered one of my drums is cracked 3/4 across the surface... as we all know new drums don't exist, but there is an 175000LB Eaton 2 speed with good drums but hydraulic brakes. Would it be possible to just swap my banjos, s-cams and brake chambers to the other axle and install the 16.5x7" air brake shoes on the old parts? (This would make future brake parts easier to find, if drums are available) Or to face the wider drums down to fit my 4.5" shoes on my original axle.
Does anybody know any good repairs for a cracked drum?
I think a welder experienced in dealing with cast iron could fix the drum. The question would be will someone do it? Imagine the liability of a brake drum coming apart.
As to swapping the other drums over....Look long and hard at how things fit together. If your backing plates will come over and everything fits....
Thank goodness this thing has air brakes. My local Advanced Auto was able to order in NEW 16.5"x7" brake drums, which I can just mill to 4.5" if needed. Part #52230-10. Won't have the chance to swap them on until I can remove the entire banjo with the drums, (broke a retaining bolt that faces the ground Grr...) but it's moving in the right direction.
