Welcome to FTE!

F61 = F600 gas, 4x2

C = 370 2V gas V8 OR 429 4V gas V8. The 370 is noted as "F600 only". If you have a 4BBL carb, check for an emissions sticker to confirm engine size--if it's still there!

V = Kentucky Truck Plant

DJ1458 = 1979 numerical series (Corrected. Note 1979 model year numbers start at DC0,001, ending at FK9,999)

176 = 176 inch wheelbase

No color code--possibly part of the special order when it's not shown.

F616 = F600 gas, 2WD, 24,000 lbs GVWR

AA8 = AA = Black Vinyl / 8 = 81A Standard Cab

L = Transmatic (Ford rebranded Allison) model AT-540 automatic transmission. The MPC shows this as a 6 speed, but it is a 4 speed. More on that at the end of the decode.

53H
53 = Rockwell (Timken) model H-172 single speed rear axle, 17,500 lbs capacity, 6.17 ratio
H = Ford 12,000 lb capacity front axle. Notes say "Tire carrier w/manual steering-w/Steer-Ease"

24000 = 24,000 lbs GVWR

740814
74 = Seattle Distric Code
0814 = Special Order Number. Besides color, no clue what the special order might be.

Regarding the transmission. The MPC shows this as a 6 speed, all the other info you can find show it to be a 4 speed.

Go through this thread and find the AT 540 decoded. Post 7 and beyond will show Allison info, the Ford MPC, and several other posts from folks who have experience with the AT540.

Let me know if something doesn't line up or any other question.

Thank you, @85e150, for your rapid and thorough response!

Could you confirm the year of manufacture?

Thanks again for the terrific reply.

Ooops, got that 1979 off a little. Corrected above.

With the serial numbers starting at DC0,001, your DJ1,458 might have been built in 1978 as production of the 1979 model year trucks began in August of 1978. I do not have the monthly serial number info. You may find build dates on engine castings that read 1978 but it is normal for engine (and other) castings to be months ahead of vehicle builds.
