I’ve got a 1993 f-250 with the 7.3 idi engine. Starter went out on me this morning so we dropped the one that was in there and drove over to NAPA for a replacement, the starter presented to me was similar but not the same as the one that had been in the truck. The attendant then grabbed a starter for a powerstroke that matched mine. We bought it and came back for an install, when we hit the key we can here the starter spin but it will not engage the ring gear, does anyone have any tips or pointers for wiring or do I need another starter. thanks!
The Power Master 9050 is the one for the IDI Engine.
The Power Master 9051 is the one for the Power Stroke.
Only difference is the 51 has a spacer, remove the spacer
and it it fits the IDI engine. Actually the same Starter except
for the spacer.
So with all that said, I would guess the PS Starter you have
probably doesn`t come in far enough to engage the Starter
Teeth with the FW Teeth.
You need to take it back and get the proper Starter.
Iam using the PM 9050 the past 4 years, a great Starter, a lot
of members use it, but costs more.
If your Starter spins, then it isn`t a wiring issue.
Thank you for the reply, the starter I got had a sheet of paper on the box showing another starter but with a spacer, it doesn’t have the cone shaped peach over the bendix gear but I assume it would still work.
the only thing puzzling me is how the supposed powerstroke starter that came off of the truck worked if it was too short. Either way thank you for the help, I will be purchasing a new one tomorrow.
