will the IDI 3 bolt starter work on the 02 powerstroke?

i have a fresh starter sitting on the shelf for the past 10 years for the 7.3 IDI, and the 02 starter is dying on me.
if i can save $100 by using the one i already have....

Not sure about the IDI format, but I'm running a 3-bolt Mitsubishi on mine right now. The third bolt is a real bugger to install, and you probably want to chase the threads before trying to do it with the starter in position

thanks for that Pete. i seem to remember that the IDI starter worked on the first gen stroke, and that the first gen starter worked on the second gen stroke, but don't remember if anyone tried using a IDI starter on a second gen stroke.

i guess i will have to just get under it and hope for the best.
my leg is still only around 60%, so it is difficult for me to get up and down off the floor.
so i would prefer to only have to get under the truck once if i can help it.

I am going with no.
I checked OReillys site to compare a 1992 to a 2001. None were shared.

I would bet it dose. My e-99 has the 3 bolt starter so I bet it was a carry over.

I have starter and engine sitting on the garage floor, if you need I can take some measurements for you.

There could be a potential issue of clearance from an overall length perspective. I believe, though, that the three-bolt units are not as large of a diameter as the Denso units, but I did have to grind a little on my subframe when I installed my first Denso knock-off unit. That said, the three-bolt unit I'm running now did not have a length clearance issue, so I'm only mentioning it because it will be impossible to check that particular dimension with an engine out of the vehicle.

mehhh. no big deal, i will just get one from my guy and drop off the one that is in the truck once i get it swapped.

with my luck i would put the IDI starter in the 02 and the next day the one in the 88 would die.

REPLACEMENT STARTER IS 3 BOLT 2001 7.3 138K

I feel "comfortable" installing the Mitsubishi 3 bolt , Lifetime, GR starter but Ford went from 3 bolt to 2 on my 2001 7.3, etc .Junk Starter removed is a 2 bolt. The new starter is 3 bolt which there is a female thread on bell housing to accept 3rd bolt. I read from y'all that 2 same, 1 different....Ford dealer here doesn't have any of the bolts. Should I feel confident about getting 3rd bolt from my local ACE Hardware ??? Or order one which could take 2-4 days mail time....? First time out on this project...any input welcome.

I would just get the same grade and length bolt from your hardware store and if it had a lock washer on it, get one of those too. I swapped my OEM 3 bolt starter out for a Denso 2 bolt starter and am very happy with it. I had to get longer bolts due to the surface of the Denso being twice as thick as the OEM, but it was not a big deal.

Yep agreed with Sous, hardware store bolt is fine. Pretty much anything with markings on the head will be strong enough, but hey that grade 8 is only 23 cents more so...

I'd also recommend some blue Loctite. I've never had a problem but starter bolts coming loose is a pretty common issue.

Thank you. Used bolt/washer from Ace and will get stock grade sent from Ford. Install complete, will replace 3rd bolt when rec've it. Ace did not have correct grade, but put it in the easiest place to replace. NOT the frickin top bolt hole. F*c Me. Thanks again !
