Any advice for troubleshooting this issue?
When hitting the brakes, RR tail light does not light up.
I remember the tail light will light up if the night time running lights are on.
When a trailer is connected. The trailer RR seems to blink no problem and the trailer RL does not work???
I have a LOADpro dynamic test lead but I'm doubting this would be of use.
If a fresh bulb is installed, It will work for awhile then blow.
So the running lamp always works but the filament for the brake lamp keeps burning out? It could be a bad taillamp assembly but check the fuse for that circuit in the power distribution box under the hood and make sure it's the correct amperage rating and maybe just replace it whatever it looks like to be certain. Sounds like somehow too much power is getting back there to the bulb but because the brake lamps are not always on you're getting away with it for a little while before the filament burns up. It's a dual filament bulb in the pick'emup taillamps also I a pretty sure. (I don't have a pickup).
As for the trailer circuits, just do yourself a favor and go buy a 7-way circuit tester from the local RV or Auto parts store. Very handy troubleshooter when trying to figure out if it's a truck problem or a trailer problem.
Thanks Brandon for that product recommendation. I replaced the rear right tail light bulb housing as you suggested and fuse 1 under the hood.
All has been working.
For future readers, I had a similar experience to this after bringing the truck out of off season storage. Perhaps the 5,500 mile cross country trip last year had something to do with it, but I suspect it was aging of the parts involved.
I ended up removing the tail light housing, cleaning the contacts in the socket with a pick and then with electrical contact cleaner spray. Then I pried the contacts up a bit to make the gap a bit smaller. I installed a new bulb and pried those contacts up a bit too.
So far so good, but I have only driven the truck a couple hundred miles since then due to fuel prices and life events getting in the way.
