2000 e450 compression test results, not good

Hi everyone, got a compression test done on my bus today and well……. Not the results I was looking for….

I tested each cylinder twice. Letting the gauge puff about 5 times before I stopped cranking. The bus wouldn’t start already due to HPO issues and now I know where the compression stands….

results are as follows;

2) 300/325…… 1) 300…..
4) 325………… 3) 0……..
6) 100/125…… 5) 300….
8) 325………… 7) 0…….

How do I determine my next step? Leak down test? Put a little oil in the dead cylinders and retest? New motor?

This engine had broke down on me while driving on the freeway. I determined low ICP first, then dead head tested the HPOP and each cylinder head by itself. Found a bad injector which would leak internally. Resulting in 0 psi to the drivers side head.

I wanted to confirm engine health before diving into new injectors, but looks like I have bigger issues on my hands….. pretty demotivated, even more frustrated now….

Thanks for reading, please let me know what you think

Did you check running compression? What tester are you using?

Have you run a blow by test (a proper one with a gauge)?

Leak down tests tend to be more reliable and tell you more than a compression test. If you can perform one it should provide a rather clear picture.

That is ugly. Any idea why you got two gooseggs? Will a small diameter borescope fit through your glow plug holes? It might be helpful to you if you could take a look inside.

I did not check running compression before it broke down, I can’t do it now because it will not start…

I have not done a proper blow by test either…

I believe most would agree that a leak down test is the last thing you would do before determining pulling the motor or opening it up, no?

Not a clue, I do need a new scope for work so that’s convenient….

Ouch. The only time I had 0 compression was when I blew a hole in my piston. The others have got you covered. Run a leakdown on 3 and 7 to see what's up.

For the borescope, I can tell you the glowplug hole necks down from what you can see at the top of the cylinder head. My borescope with a 5mm head will not go all the way through into the cylinder.

Well...that bites. I have an engine out there with the injectors out of it and my scope fits through those so there's an alternative. I also don't know what diameter my scope it, it's narrower than the cheap one I bought a few years ago.

Looking into leakdown procedure right now… I hope no holes or bad cylinder walls! Obviously something is wrong otherwise there would be compression

Have you looked at the valve train operation on those 2 supposed dead cylinders while cranking?
