2013 XL Differential Noise

I have a noise in the instrument cluster that goes " eh eh eh eh eh" and the frequency goes up and down with the speed. I know there is no speedometer cable but I swear that's where it sounds like it's coming from. You can't hear it on the outside if you roll down the window and it's so faint that you can't hear it with the radio on. Noise doesn't change when applying the brakes and can't hear it above 60mph. Any thoughts?

Here's the rest of the story. Found out the noise is in the rear differential. I had changed the differential cover and gasket because of a small leak. I didn't notice the noise at the time because the weather was still nice and I couldn't hear it with the window down. Didn't notice until the weather got colder and the windows were closed. Finally put the rear end on jack stands and put it in gear and the noise was in the differential. I had filled it with Lucas 75/140 synthetic gear lube with states that no friction modifier is needed. My truck does have a limited slip rear. Called my local transmission shop and they told me to put in Ford friction modifier. Put in 4 oz. of the Ford XL-3 which is what the owners manual calls for. I'll drive it for a week to get it mixed in and see if it helps.

My '97 developed a rear-end noise at about 30,000 miles. Ford rebuilt it, and some months later the noise returned. They rebuilt it again and after a bit the noise returned. They put the 4th set of gears in it and the noise was still there immediately after the rebuild. Despite the whine, they told me to "go away" immediately after that 3rd rebuild. I drove that truck for 20 years, putting nearly 300,000 miles on it with that constant reminder of how badly their customer service was.

If I was in your shoes, I'd trade it at the first sign of the noise returning. (Your mileage may vary.)

dont believe ANYTHING about gear lube containing friction modifier... I ALWAYS add the bottle... Get mine from Auto Zone and it is 7 oz.

The friction modifier didn't seem to help. I notice that the noise is louder when it's cold and I first start driving. After the rear warms up a little it's not as pronounced. I has an Explorer with high milage and the rear whined a lot worse than this one and I drove it for years with no problem. I'm probably worrying about nothing.

I had a 2002 Explorer that started that about 30,000 miles... I rebuilt it when it had 170,000 miles and got rid of about 75% of the noise... Gear cut, too tight of bearing at original install ... anything can cause that... Mine justs "wore in" and then ran that way for 10 years.

I added a second bottle of Ford friction modifier and the noise seems to be gone.

My 2010 (280K miles) has limited slip and Ive changed the fluid and added 1 then 2 bottles of friction modifier to oil change. I now want to just get a new differential. Doesn't look fun changing the clutch packs. The chatter and shuddering is real bad. What's my best option? New complete axle or can I buy a complete differential?? TIA

Update to my previous post. Even after adding 2 bottles of modifier the chirping noise is still there. Not as bad and not all the time. Comes and goes.
