Hey everyone. I'm down to my last old stock FL-1995 filter and am getting desperate for a replacement that will fit my 2001 XLT extended cab. (See middle of thread for comparo pix of old FL-1995 and new FL-1995A.)

My question is, does anyone know of a replacement that's a bit shorter than the new-style FL-1995A? I need something that's as short or shorter than the old FL-1995.

I tried the Mobile 1, and it's too long. (See pic comparing old FL to the Mobile 1.)

The problem with my truck is a clearance issue with the oil pan. (See pic.)

Mobile 1 equivalent is much longer than the old FL-1995. It's even longer than the FL-1995A, I think.

The old FL-1995 is kinda fussy to get on. There's just BARELY enough clearance to get it on the stud. I can't get the new FL-1995A to go on at all.

This is the first I've heard of such a thing. What's up with that? Is that on a van, or what? What dimensions are different on the 'A' version? I don't know if it was discussed here yet but somewhere I was reading that there was a change in ownership and manufacturing of oil filters and wonder if that could be the reason for the revised part number.

Why is your engine block to oil pan clearance different than other trucks?

I'm wondering if the oil filter oil filter mount is not clocked right on the oil cooler tube. I remember it having an alignment key slot but who knows if it's been off before. I do know that it's not an issue with either filter on both of our 2000 7.3L engines.

If it "wasn't clocked right" the cooler end with the filter wouldn't seal against the block....

He would have much bigger problems with the engine running than the oil filter not fitting if it wasn't sealing against the block

We have seen where the big Donaldson oil filter makes contact with the oil pan as referred to in post #38 in this very thread, but like Mark I don't recall seeing the Motorcraft filter making contact.

I have been using a K&N white filter with a 1" nut welded to the end for almost a decade, but could not tell you how the outside diameter compares to the Motorcraft filter.

I realize that which is why if it has been removed. They don't tend to go together easily and maybe Bubba made some adjustments...😜

I’m sorry to say I can’t answer your question as to which filter may be shorter. I did a quick check of a couple common filters and they list as longer.
The K&N mentioned by Sous shows 8-5/16”
The WIX which I use shows 8-1/16”
Curiously, both versions of the FL1995 list as the same 7-13/16” length.

The spec checks were performed at O’Reilly’s site, I don’t purchase from there but it their website was cooperating for searches. You may want to confirm elsewhere.

I wonder if a smaller diameter filter may allow you the needed clearance. I did not look into those figures.

Recently I had an issue with filter fitment on dad’s 390 swapped truck which required a shorter filter than the normal Ford FL1A/WIX 51515. He recently passed so maybe I’m way off on why it took a different filter, but the websites were not listing his truck as a 390 option and the job wasn’t going as planned. I needed a completely different filter than the 51515 I’d prepped for the job and my locally owned go-to part store was closed. So began searching for cross references online for the WIX 51068 which I had just taken off. Ended up going with the K&N version since Sous highly recommends them and the “after hours” store doesn’t carry my normal WIX.

Found this awesome website Oil Filter Cross Reference Website which you can see a screenshot below. It’s a long list!
The linked cross reference will give you lots of choices to look through and try to find a suitable replacement. Maybe you can run across a good filter spec website too.

Your truck is surely an oddball with the pan clearance issue. I haven’t had any issues on a few 7.3’s using the supposedly longer WIX filters.

As far as I know, it's just a run of the mill 01 F250 SuperDuty XLT, extended cab.

The guy I bought it from in 2006 said it had an "ambulance package" engine, which had something to do with the radiator if I remember right. (I've never been able to validate his claim.)

See my photos in this thread from 11-11-21 to see the difference between 1995 and 1995A. About the only thing the same on those filters is the hole, thread and paint color.

Yes sir, I just meant something seems to be strange with your filter adapter angle.

I see a few potential solutions to your issue.
1) follow the cross reference link and research some of the 72 other compatible filters for length, width, shape and give another brand a try.
2) find a completely different filter having the same thread, sealing surface diameter, flow, and micron rating. Realistically (as the norm) oil filters aren’t too application specific other than those features. As I mentioned, dad’s 390 has a short filter (cross member clearance issue) that deviates from what the book called for. Possibly a call to a filter manufacturer could help in this search.
3) “massage” the pan
4) swap out the oil filter adapter portion (or entire oil cooler) which “should” clean up your alignment.

My thought is the perpendicularly is off between the block face and oil filter sections of your adapter.

Good luck and please come back to share your solution for future readers who may deal with the same issue.

I may have found one.

Fleetguard LF3630

Now I’ll go back to the cross reference website and use this number. It may give other brand options. Update: it didn’t provide any other options.

@Bad Angus I have 2 FL-1995s in the garage. I will sell them for whatever the current walmart price is for the FL1995A is plus shipping. Or if you have FL1995A you want to send me in exchange for them, that works as well. Either filter works on my engine.

On my 2001 F20 SD 7.3L my Filter is approximately 3/4 inch to 1 inch away from my oil pan. Only use AMSOIL or WIX filters to go14,000 miles between oil changes.

Oil is cheap compared to engine rebuilds. Way to many miles IMO.
