Anyone know what brand filter NAVASTAR/INTERNATIONAL used on THEIR 444 engines originally?
Wonder what they use now to service trucks with the 444 engine?
Thanks for all the help you guys! I just got off the phone with Clay and he said it’s nothing more than a part number that supersedes the old one. Does that mean it’s now Chinese instead of other I don’t know for sure but I’m going to run them and not look back. He said they switched over to the A earlier this year so most places have been just depleting their old stock if you did get one that’s a FL-1995 recently. Good to know
Fwiw the oring is different but it’s the same now as most aftermarket filters (flat vs. beveled) which should be a non issue I think.
Again thanks for the help everyone. I wanted to make sure I didn’t get the wrong one on there
Based on all the info and photos that followed the above post, it seems Clay was wrong in saying it is just a part number change.
FL-1995 (old) = Walmart 2020
Printed/paint label
same size as -A. No noticeable difference in height.
gasket is not flat
inside cage (holes) is different than -A
When cut open:
can is thinner than -A (noticeable in squeezing can)
built in (Ring) that is in the -A.
“spring” is flat style.
Yellow glue at metal edges. Well glued.
filter had 72 folds, but was ~2” shorter in length than the -A
filter had metal crimp at connection point. Just crimp not glued too.
FL-1995-A (new) = Walmart 2021
Sticker label
gasket is flat (like many other oil filters).
can is thicker than non-A
inside cage is stamped slots is different than non-A
When cut open:
there is a ring between plate and filter.
spring is a “Spring”
filter had 68 folds, but was ~2” longer in length than the non-A
brown/black glue at metal edges. Well glued.
filter had glued crimp at connection point. After 3k, was still well glued. Had to pull apart.
Overall both filters appeared to be same after ~3k miles.. metal flakes were from grinder used to cut open the cans.
This is an awesome thread...and quite honestly I went from agreeing they were likely Chinese crap and was about to order a bunch of the non As, to the rabbit hole of deconstruction, to they are probably fine and I don't need to hoard the old ones.
@Bad Angus , well done on documenting the filter differences. We have seen the Donaldson blue oil filter rub the oil pan before. I believe it was @Brandonpdx that experienced this issue and provided pictures.
Some have no clearance problems at all, but some apparently do.
I have been using K&N white oil filters with the 1" nut on the end of them. I use this style on all 4 of my vehicles as I like consistency and uniformity. They are pricey, but I wait for sales/deals at the part store or Amazon and buy a few at a time for a hood price.
Just putting that out there as an alternative for your consideration going forward.
That was me but somebody else here had some pictures showing the same thing in that thread, so I went back to the Motorcraft filter. I haven't done the oil change and installed it yet but this time I let the Amsoil guy sell me one of theirs. Not expecting it to be any better than the Ford one just wanted to save some hassle going somewhere else for a filter. And since I know Y2K likes pictures...
Looks about the same but I'll have to take a picture of it next to the Ford one when I take it off. Cant remember whether I have the A model or the older one.
Bought one last week and noticed the part number was FL-1995-A. Parts guy said its the same filter.
Anyone know what's up with the A designation?
Thanks
David
Don't you know by adding that A they can get an extra couple of bucks for the filter...I noticed it too and there was a thread on here about it being the same, except the increase in price...

David... for more information regarding the FL-1995-A, scroll up to Post #1 of this present thread, which your new thread on the same topic was merged with, to provide you (and all future readers) with the benefit of previous discussion on this topic all in one place.
Regarding the flat vs. beveled gasket... For a given tightening torque, you are going to get more psi of sealing force if the gasket area is initially smaller, as on the beveled edge. Whether that means an angled gasket will ultimately seal better than a flat one, I don't know, but it will certainly compress more and possibly be more forgiving if the filter is undertorqued.
