Driving on interstate and temp gauge skyrockets. Immediately pull over and shut it down. Proceed to check everything out, no leaking, oil is clean (no water). After engine cooled for about 30 minutes I started engine then tapped (pretty hard) on the thermostat. Engine didn’t get hot and drove the 130 miles home, just as I turn the corner by my house the temp begins to shoot up again. I’m thinking the thermostat has failed and stuck closed. The tapping or just cooling allowed the thermostat to open? Opinions?
Or you have a funky ECT sensor or wiring. If you have an infrared gun, check the T/S housing or front cover by the channels for coolant and see what they read.
Definitely get a scanner hooked up so you can read the live data from the ECT. The fan should be roaring long before the stock temp gauge starts moving above normal so you may have a sensor issue.
Old thermostat removed and tested bad. New thermostat installed and all seems good in the cooling system. Now however I’m getting no turbo boost. Wasn’t having any issues before. Is there some kind of limp mode that kicks in? Also no check engine light is on.
thanks,
Richard

That same thing happened to a buddy of mine on his '07 and a new thermostat fixed it.
Regarding your boost situation, it'd take a close look at the ebps and connector. Make sure it didn't get wet or a wire isn't chaffed.
I really can’t say for sure it’s a loss of boost, 04 has no boost gauge and my hearing isn’t good so I can’t hear the turbo. It does however have a huge loss of power. Push it to the floor and it slowly accelerates and shifts hard.
I ordered a scan gauge that will be here Friday. Hoping it will help answer a few questions. I did wonder about the limp mode. Disconnected negative battery cables for about 10 minutes and reconnected hoping to reset everything. Still having the same issue.
Dang, hardly anyone buys Scangauge anymore. For $30 you can get a BAFX Bluetooth adapter and have your pick of $5 phone apps, TorquePro or Forscan. Or the free PC version of Forscan, if you have a Bluetooth PC/tablet.
