2017 F350 delayed start

I have a 2017 dually with 330,000 that started having a slightly delayed start. Meaning I would turn the key over and it would take a second or two to fire. Currently, it's about 4 seconds before it fires. Anyway. Took it into the dealership and they said my high-pressure fuel pump is working as it should. Injectors as well and I have good rail pressure. Asked then why is it doing what it's doing. The response was that Ford changed their fuel system design to incorporate check valves in the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors so that if or when the fuel pump goes out it doesn't wreck the injectors. So essentially one or more check valves may be leaking. The service manager continued to tell me that the problem with the new design is there is no way of troubleshooting which check valve it is. So Ford's recommendation is for me to replace my whole fuel system which would run me $10,000. Since that recommendation was given to me, I have replaced my high-pressure fuel pump with no luck in correcting the problem. FYI - there weren't any metal shavings when I replaced the fuel pump. Ideas?

Is it cranking longer than you’d expect? If so, there are some with fuel pump issues that randomly takes 5-10 seconds of cranking to start. Mine does that when hot.

Man, so long as it starts after a few seconds and no check engine light for any fuel issues, I'd leave it alone.

I thought about leaving it alone too. Starters are cheap to replace.

If you didn't listen to the Power Stroke technician, why would you listen to random strangers on the internet?

His advise and diagnosis seemed sound to me.

If it starts then run it. There is no way a 10k investment on a truck with that mileage is a sound investment.

Then wouldn't they say that the HPFP failed from the get go? It read that the tech isolated the cause to injector check valves, but Ford doesn't offer that repair alone. Much like Ford requiring you to purchase the whole diff rebuild kit to get a crush sleeve.

I do not see this tech as a commission hungry person.

It was the service manager who told him, and he does work off commission.

(NOTE: Apparently the 6.2s and 7.3s share the same fuel pump.)
There are several threads on here regarding long or delayed starting ...... I will try and get them all linked here for reference.

If you read the other threads it is clear that that problem is the fuel pump, or to be more precise, the check valve in the fuel pump assembly (the entire fuel pump assembly has to be replaced).

Also noted in some of these other linked threads is the fact that early in the 2017s ......... the check valve in the fuel pump assembly became a known problem. Apparently Ford knew the problem existed and the fuel pump assembly was allegedly upgraded to include a new and improved check valve as well as a new part # sometime in 2017/2018. When I replaced mine the first time I obtained the new and allegedly improved fuel pump assembly and part #.

Mine (6.2L) started going out around 20000-30000 miles. My truck still started and I did not realize what the problem was and did not get motivated to fix it until around 60000-70000 miles. I dropped the tank and replaced myself. PITA but really was not that difficult.
(mine always started, however, there were several times when you wondered if it really was actually going to start. I thought I was going to run the battery down a time or 2.)

Now at 131,000 miles I am experiencing extreme delayed starting, again. When my wife gets in the truck and notices enough to comment you know there's a problem .

Checking prices ....... TASCA $305 (about the best I found).
But............ there is a new part #:
  • Manufacturer: Ford
  • Part Number: HC3Z-9H307-AK
  • Replaces: HC3Z-9H307-Q, HC3Z-9H307-U, PFS-1144-, PFS-1231-

(((((For all those that want to think the problem is something other than the fuel pump, please explain the dozens and dozens here that replaced the fuel pump and fixed the problem ........... including me. )))))))))

Hope this helps someone!!!!!!!!
