Hi guys, I have a problem with ignition switch on my 58 panel truck l hope you might be able to help me with. When the switch is in the accessory position there is still power to coil. Bad switch or wiring issue ? Thank You
The terminals are marked on the ignition switch although you might have to pull it out from under the dash to see them. Check the ignition and accessory terminals to see if they have power when they are supposed to. If so you've ruled out the switch and you can start tracing the wiring to find out why the coil is getting voltage when it shouldn't.
I have a similar problem with my 1960. It just started last week. When I turn the key off it now keeps running, with the "gen" light and "oil" light illuminated. I changed out the ignition switch. No change. After trying to isolate it seems that when I turn on the headlights momentarily everything seems to get back to normal.
Next question along these lines. I see that places offer headlight switches for '57,'58,'59 and '61 trucks, but no 1960. Anyone know why? What's the difference?

The 1960 headlight switch was a one year only piece, I think it was shared with a car model (Falcon?). I had a '60 at one time, the only difference I can remember is that the 1960 trucks had a fuse box. The previous years had a couple of fuses on the headlight switch, the rest inline.
As far as your run-on problem. Does the truck have the original charging system?

Thank you for replying. My problem seems to have (maybe temporarily?) fixed itself, but I know how these things go. Tomorrow it may be worse. But it has the original charging system. One day I'd like to upgrade. Maybe that day has come. Is there logic to how an old charging system would cause the ignition to stay on after the switch is off?
I've heard of it happening on old and new charging systems. I only asked to help lead you down a diagnostic path.
The old generators were far more rugged and reliable than the alternators that replaced them but were limited in current output. By the seventies most of the alternators could churn out 60A or better at lower RPM and were not nearly as fragile as early models.
It's easy to upgrade the charging system. Popular among Ford lovers is the 3G alternator. I chose a Delcotron 10SI as it was built in all sorts of configurations, easy to work on, can be brought up to almost 100 amps if you need to and brackets are readily available. The best bet is to leave the generator as is while you take care of more important items. When you run out of other things to do, the generator gives you problems, or you swap engines is a good time to switch to an alternator.
