Hi I am back. Sold the Dodge now back to Ford. Its new to me 2010 F250. V-10. Its a nice truck had some major issues but most resolved now. We downsized the horse trailer to 2H bumper pull straight load with large Dressing room. The smaller truck is what we needed
I want to make a few mods and add external trans and water temp gauges.
Question is - where is a port on the 5R110 transmission that I can use to install the external temperature sensor? I did this add on with my 2006 V10/5R110 tranny. While I do trust the dash trans temp gauge --sort of - it never moves off the 'normal' spot on the dial, even when loaded and pulling the 5mile 7% grade to home. I just want to 'feel' better with another gauge with numbers.
A comment about the purchase, I bought this truck from an online seller dealer. The ad and the on-line discussions lead me to believe this was a pristine truck..HAHA yep got sort of shafted. Made the deal on the phone and email. Traded the 2000 Dodge with 93000 miles BUT it was 20 yrs old and had issues, mostly never could get the braking to function correctly after replacing ALL the hard and soft brake lines. Shop techs could not get the ABS to function. The truck was a problem that was better fixed by trade-in.
I did learn again NOT to trust any and all dealers, they all lie. Misrepresent the condition of the 'new' truck, even when I was upfront about the issues with the trade-in. Wont buy another on-line .
Only issue remaining with the Ford is the plugs. I decide to get it done at the FORD dealer. Its a real mess (job) getting the rear plugs out and back in.
Its nice to be back on the Ford forums I will start another thread about all the issues I had to resolve, it was a real job.
That isn't totally correct. The 5R110 didn't change at all externally. The port is on the driver's side, just above the pan, towards the front of the trans.
Hi Mark and Fefanatic.. Yep _ I found it just above the pan to frame mating. Good /great to see you still here Mark. I read all you posts and tech notes from back in my 7.3 -4R100 days to my 2005 psd 6.0 and the 2006-v10. Sure like this V-10. Getting 11.9 no load 10.9 hauling trailer loaded.
FiveO --OK great idea, I am still locked into old school-real gauges- will look at the OBD scanner--have a few old phones I can setup for dedicated data.
There's other options too but they generally cost more. The Scanguage II is about $150 and can generally pull just about anything thats in the computer. If you want to add external sensors like EGT, fuel pressure etc you need something like the Edge CTS but those are MUCH more expensive. Probably not really needed for a gas rig.
This is the wifi adapter I use when I connect my laptop to the ECM for Forscan monitoring, also works for the phone, I believe it's specific to iphone or android:
I found my old scangauge 2 -thought it was long lost after a few moves, found in the bottom of the electronics junk box.. Well, it does work for all the data points EXCEPT transmission temp. I got the X-GAUGE setup data did the data entry checked 3 times.. nope no trans temp.
At least I have coolant temp and the other data it shows. But I think I still prefer old school real gauges. I also noted that most of the ODBI Bluetooth plug in to smartphone say some data based on vehicle may not be available.
So just going to order trans temp gauge. I will use the scangauge for coolant. temps
And yes the idiot gauge on the dash never moves. The actual water temp went from 189 to 195 during my test run.
Thanks for the input
The stock trans gauge is completely useless. Hits "normal" around 100F and doesn't move until something crazy like 230F. I've never pushed mine that far but others online have reported thats the range.
Coolant is similar but has a small range. On my 6.0 the normal range is about 185-225F. In that the range the gauge doesn't move.
ok I missed the full list of trans temps setting will try these. thanks. I did order a real gauge today.. if any of the noted x-gauge data settings work I can have both .
Yep noted water temp varied all over but idiot gauge did not move.
A follow up report. Used one of the above provided X-Gauge program setup . The second on the list worked. Trans runs at 160 to 185 pulling the BP horse trailer. Did great on the 7% 4 mile grade to the house. Idiot gauge goes to point X at about 100* NEVER moves. The scan gauge will work well for me with accurate trans temps.
I have an electric gauge I want to install, but the dang test port plug wont come out, Figured it was metric but the lands on the plug rounded out after a few attempts. So I plan on getting a brass tee and splice it in line with the trans hose going in to the cooler. Should show the temp of the out hot line. or just keep using the scan-gauge.
Water temps ran 195 to 205 from on the flat to pulling the grade. Idiot gauge never moved.
I did change the coolant - flushed the system - put in a Tee flush out fitting in the heater hose coming off the engine. Could not figure out how to remove the 'different' hose clamps on the radiator hose. It worked Ok. Ran some rad cleaner thru it flushed filled with plain well water (soft) , drove it around for 30 min never went over 190. Drained and then made an error - refilled with GREEN coolant. I did add a bottle of a site recommended coolant booster. I have used that stuff in all my trucks for many years, seems to run cooler.
Crap, from what I can read it should be OK just not good for many miles or years. I only put about 3000 miles a year on my truck, only used to pull trailer and get hay etc.
I might plan on putting in a 190 or 185 high flow thermostat, then flush and fill with the correct color coolant. It does run hotter then the 195 thermostat but did not really over-heat. So might do nothing.
Thanks for the comments nice to be back on the Ford lists/forums and driving a Ford truck again
