Trans Temps

My 02 E350 SD V10 (32K) and I believe a 4R100 trans has fluctuating temps. I installed an aftermarket B&M trans temp gauge with the sensor in the port just ahead of the shifter on the left side of trans. While driving and towing a 6000# travel trailer the temp starts at around 160 but will climb as high as 325 then will go back down and then back up and it keeps doing this , I am driving in OD but the engine and trans don't seem to be working that hard it's not constantly downshifting or anything like that. Thought it might be a faulty sensor so I replaced it with a new one but the temps still fluctuate. Was wondering if anyone has experienced this before and what did you do. I saw in a manual that there is a cooler by-pass valve on the trans could this be the problem or is this a normal condition for this trans, if it is I don't think I like it.

Wow, 325 is bad. On my 94 E4OD towing an 8,000# trailer, my temps run between 180 to 210 in hot high speed towing. It spiked once to 230 after a long hot drive when I had to reverse up a slight hill about a block.

I do not know your model tranny so take what I say as being backyard mechanic problem solving...

I would suspect something wrong with the electrical connections or sensor first, the up and down readings would point this way. At 325 you should be spitting fluid out the dipstick or vent. If that didn't happen then it is the electricals. Could be a bad ground, or bad connections to the gauge. Or like you read maybe the bypass valve is acting up?

325 is really bad. So if that is your actual temp you have a problem. But I doubt this is the real temp. Maybe you can borrow a known accurate gauge?

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

There is no way that trans went to 325. Something is wrong with the gauge or the wiring.

Thanks for somewhat putting my mind at ease alittle I too thought 325 no way. I have double checked and triple checked the wiring doing voltage drops so thats good and I just talked to a friend with the same set up and he said ok to swaping gauges so I'll do that for this weekend and see what happens and let you know.
