So far I have not gotten a check engine light but I haven’t driven it much so we’ll see. Does the regulator let it build more boost as well or just prevent the CEL from illuminating?

If you haven’t seen the cel then it’s probably not defuelling unless the light is burnt out. Easy check for that is does it light up at bulb check when you first turn the ignition on.
A boost fooler will allow the system to build over the 24psi, but limits what the MAP sensor sees to prevent the defuelling.
Not really it was all pretty straight forward. The turbo to collector clamp was the worst of it. For that I used a small chisel and small hammer which popped it off with some patience. I left all of the wiring harness and oil lines in place and just worked under them which was no problem.
Brake cleaner and lots of purple power cleaned up the plenum nicely. I used acetone on the sealing surfaces to ensure there was no oily residue. I wanted to do the passenger side plenum as well but it looked like a lot more work so I decided to leave it alone.
Thanks. I see guys talking about purple power so guess I need to check it out.
I was debating on what to do about the HPO line. Since you worked around it I may try to do the same. Just hate to break the seal on something 20 years old that’s not leaking.
I have been using Simple Green as a degreaser and all purpose cleaner for a long time. I think I started using it when I saw the F-15 squadron maintainers in the UK were using it to clean the aircraft.
There were strict guidelines about what sort of cleaners and chemicals could be rinsed off and possibly introduced into the subsurface water table. My use of Simple Green was focused around our furry family members and the safety of their silliness and attraction to drinking from puddles whenever they please.
Using an environmentally friendly safe product is even more important for us now as the runoff of water from washing the vehicles runs directly into the pond after the 20 feet of grass between the driveway and pond. Then eventually into lake Hartwell one mile downstream. I am very conscientious when using harsh products like brake cleaner or harmful chemicals. They are captured in a pan and disposed of properly at hazardous waste collection facilities or according to local guidelines.
Turns out, Purple Power is ALSO environmentally safe and biodegradable. Perhaps after using Simple Green for so long, it is time to give Purple Power a shot. I am always willing to listen and learn from people with different methods than I use or have become accustomed to.
Thank you for sparking my interest in Purple Power as a replacement for the long time degreaser I have been using.
Diving in! So far it’s been straight forward. Noticed the boots on the spider have orange silicone all over them... I hate that stuff. Got new boots so that’s good.
Just fighting the clamp on the babies butt... oye!
I’ve put about 300 miles on the truck so far. Boost comes on strong and the egts have stayed well within the safe zone even pulling a 6% grade for a few miles. I checked my mileage (off the odometer) and it came in at 19.3 mostly freeway cruising at 70mph! So happy with the truck right now I think I’ll have more than enough power to pull my smaller camp trailer now.
Thanks again everyone for helping me get this squared away. I think in closing I’ll say if you haven’t checked for boost leaks do it now. It’s super easy to build a tester.
Well boys I’m back.. over the last two days I’ve sprung an oil leak. It’ll leave a three inch circle of oil when I park and I can only assume it’s leaking while I drive.
It’s dripping from the clutch inspection cover. I checked the engine valley and it’s clean everywhere except right under the pedestal.. there’s oil there. It is not coming from where the turbo bolts to the pedestal I’m thinking it’s coming from where the pedestal meets the engine block. It’s hard to tell though..
I made damn sure I was careful with the orings when I bolted everything down is it possible my oring has failed? Could it be coming from somewhere else? I did not use oem orings I got them from RiffRaff.
I have a five hundred mile round trip coming up in a week do I chance driving it? Oye I’m not wanting to pull that turbo again.. dang. Any thoughts? Thanks,
Maybe try something like this to narrow down where that leak is coming from before pulling the turbo again? I have one and it works fairly well.
Wireless Endoscope,
Also, one of the torque specs is wrong when it comes to the turbo. I’m thinking it’s the turbo to pedestal. The torque should be higher than shown in most lists you find. I’ll see if I can find it.
Edit: found it in a few places but this one is reputable. https://www.dieselorings.com/turbo-pedestal-o-rings-viton.html
My passenger side HPOP line was leaking at the head fitting. I let it go for a couple of months because I thought it was the tutbo pedestal.
Once I identified the leak as not the pedestal, I spotted the HPOP fitting.
The oil was running out of the fitting, down to the top edge of the plenum, back toward the pedestal, down the plenum vertical edge and into the very back of the valley.
Thanks guys! I was able to get a closer look at it and there is definitely oil in the valley under the front of the pedestal but that’s it. No oil under the spider or anywhere forward of that in the valley. High pressure lines are dry as well.
I looked at the drain hole on the back of the block and it appears to be dry but it’s hard to tell. The pedestal from what I can see shows no sign of leaking.. it’s almost impossible to see all of it but I felt around where I could and didn’t get any oil on my fingers. Turbo to pedestal is bone dry front and back.
I wiped down everything the best I could and will keep an eye on it. Thinking I’m still going to go on my trip and hope I don’t regret it!
Ugh it’s pouring oil out now I think it’s a total oring failure. Still have no idea where it’s coming from.. looks like the pedestal anywhere else it could leak from back there?
