Since I'm new to the Powerstroke I've been learning as much as I can about it. One thing for sure I'm gonna do is change oil at 5000 miles max, and use Motorcraft oil and filters. I've noticed most owners say to use the filters but they use another brand oil. My thinking is no one knows the motor better than International/Ford so they should know the best oil and filters to use. With the oil doing so much in these motors I would think they have the most appropriate oil. I know oil brand is a sore point with some folks . Just wondering why so many don't use Motorcraft oil? I used Rotella in my Dodges for years but was never warned to use Mopar filters only.
Racor is the company that designed and manufactured the filters and HFCM for our trucks. Some of us buy those products directly, which are the same that Racor private labels into Ford Motorcraft boxes.
Motorcraft or Racor will be safe from a reliable source, such as a dealer, RockAuto, or DieselFiltersOnline.
For the longest time, they did not recommend a 5W40. Once they started selling a Motorcraft version of 5W40 (at least a semi-synthetic), then they all of a sudden put it on the approved list.
Also keep in mind if you buy filters at lets say Walmart.
You want to open the box and make sure that it the right filter in that box.
There have been some reports of people swapping the items in the box.
Is this true or just an urban myth not sure but being easy to swap it's worth checking.
For oil I will be running T6 after the breaking oil is done. I will always use the Ford
filters. I may buy it in the fleet boxes but it will still be Ford.
Synthetic oil is overkill given the typical oil change schedule (and how quickly diesel oils get dirty) , blends will also work. I've been testing the following and it works just fine and is 1/3rd the cost:
What's the consensus on 5w40 or 15w40? I agree with the synthetic being a waste of money seeing as how the oil gets dirty after 300 miles anyway. Those prices are for 5 gal aren't they, not 1 gal?
