up agin er here
my beater farm truck (1978 F150 Custom, FWD, rebuilt 300 (maybe 50 feet on the motor))
plow truck that has slipped down a knoll side more than once, fitted out in Canada rusted out in Michigan, still I'd hate to scrap it
over a (maybe only one) rusted axle tube.
Not much luck on a specific ID of the Axle Housing Assy. (AHA) yet. Definitely non-removable carrier. The front cover shows
a history of removal. Was prepping to install new spring to axle U-joints and found pencil eraser size rust out hole in left axle tube, adjacent to U-bolt.
Right side not looking great either. Am yet to chisel around there. Entire frame checks out at a C minus IMO.
Remaining sheet metal (lost the bed a few years ago) in not bad shape.
Need some help to:
A. Know if the axle tubes are re-place able.
B. Know for certain (2 cents worth sought also) up or down on a weld fix.
C. I D's on any possible AHA sources (that I haven't scoured yet, (DVA has yet to get back to me)) for a used one.
Is the hole in the axle tube actually where a vent used to be?
Have a look at the video It's an 84 Bronco Dana 44 but you'll see the location of where the vent should be.
Nope, not a rusted out vent hole.
I meant to write "U-bolt" twice in my thread.
The axle tube has a rust hole at the axle-U-bolt meet
(the bolt won, no rust there at all really, needed replace due to
rust wasted clamp part)
is that your ride with the bad *ss rear AHA?
I have been lurking a while I guess
We like our salt up here
What I have gleaned so far (axle codes are not that informative IMO) is that this is a Ford AHA
Unless you are suggesting a Dana would fit ?
I don't know what it is other
than rear with leaf springs which
are connected to the axle tube via U-bolts
in the crevasse between the axle tube
and the U-bolt, throw in some salt
and you are going to get rust
So any Ford Dana 60 rear !973-1979 with your gear ratio and accommodates a 3" wide spring should work. !973-1977.5 4wd std. cab F250's won't work as well as the F350's 1973-1979. Should be easy to find one. You need to nail down the gear ratio though.
Lived up in Benzie county for awhile.
