Changing out a leaking fuel pump it became an afternoon of swearing and frustration during which time I discovered my 1984 351W didn't want to give it up easily.
What is this bracket around the pump for?
Because of it, the bracket made it impossible to get to and remove the pump from below. I had to remove the power steering pump, belts, oil pressure sending unit, and oil filter
, Just to remove the 2 bolts on the fuel pump.
I'm thinking of throwing the bracket in the welding scrap pile..... ???
I have never seen any brackets held on with the fuel pump bolts
It looks to be a pretty hefty part like used to protect a part from being hit by something.
I would think if it was used as a heat shield a sheet metal cover would work.
Lets see what others have to say?

ps if you don't use it just make sure the bolts are not too long and bottom out before the pump is tight.
Any idea of the history of this engine? I agree with the previous comments that this bracket is too stout to be a heat shield and looks more like it was meant to physically protect the pump. Any chance this engine was swapped from an industrial application, such as a generator or welder? This may not be very likely either, though, as it seems like the 300-6 is way more common for such usage, and not the 351W.
How much room is there between the pump and the frame or other components? Maybe this was something intended to protect the pump if an engine mount failed?

I bought this truck from an 80 year old original owner with 36k miles on it . I've had it 5 years and it has almost 80k miles now.
It's definitely factory original.

Rare Heavy Duty Fuel Pump Protection Bracket.
Makes changing out a fuel pump a miserable job but be assured your fuel pump will survive a head on collision at 45mph .
call BR-549 ask for Jr..
That bracket is used as an impact shield in the event of a collision on 4x4's it was found that during certain offset frontal impacts the fuel pump could be damaged enough to start spraying fuel all over but still provide enough volume for the engine to continue to run. Most of these were removed long ago as they make swapping the pump a pain.

THANK YOU.
I kinda figured it was to protect the pump but mercy, what a pita to deal with. I left it off as I installed the new pump. I guess I'll stick it in the parts pile of nonessential junk.

Interesting. We probably should have waited for you instead of just making guesses.
Was this guard found on all trucks? Other vehicles? Was it dropped after a certain point? I've never heard of it before but then again I've never looked that closely at any truck but my own.

It was also used on some vans 351W Square Body PI panthers and a variant was used on the 351M powered panthers (Canada and Marquis only). It was not installed on all trucks just certain combinations.
If the OP can have close look at the bracket and post the engineering number stamped on it (if there is one) it would be appreciated.

THERE ARE NO MARKINGS OR NUMBERS ON THE BRACKET.
