coil wire repair

So it finally happened today. After playing with some connectors, one at a time, the truck wouldn't start. I went back to the coil connector and tugged on the green wire and it came apart.

Fixed it for now, but did find a replacement from Summit racing, but I'll check NAPA on Monday. If I leave it the way it is, I'll put some RTV in the end of the shrink tubing.

RTV and copper wiring? That's like inviting a PETA member to a barbeque. There's going to be trouble.

The vinegar smell from RTV? That's acetic acid. Note the key word "acid". Not sure why it's there but I think its part of the chemical curing process. The acid will attack the copper. Doesn't even have to be making direct contact. If the wire is encapsulated by RTV, the acid fumes will have a field day on the copper.

RTV is a no go with electronics. I have seen way to many issues. It turns it bright green and travels up the wiring.

Get a big jar of dielectric grease off of amazon and coat everything in a nice fat layer.

Amazon Amazon

Ok so why don't you just remove the terminal lug from the connector Open the crimp re crimp the wire to the lug give it a spot of solder and reinstall the lug in the connector.
Or just get new terminal lugs ( https://www.clipsandfasteners.com/El...e-p/a15504.htm ) and recrimp the wire/s to the new lugs and install them in the connector..

This is not a complicated fix..

And as noted RTV will corrode wiring, Specifically as part of the curing process it releases acetic acid that will corrode the wiring. If you need to seal splices use liquid electrical tape or use the correct size of waterproof heat shrink.

If you are going to Napa, the part you need is ECH ICC1. It's a new coil connector with short pigtails. My Napa store doesn't stock it, but they can have it in a day. Autozone or one of the others may keep it in stock. I had to replace the one on my Bronco II last year.

Here are some pictures of the old female from the Ford connector. The Ford ones are more of a box style. The new terminals would not lock into the Ford connector.
I did push some of the 3M grease into the end of the shrink tubing.

The Correct ones.
Just match you wire gauge and pick your terminal.
https://www.clipsandfasteners.com/Fo...e-p/a14889.htm
https://www.clipsandfasteners.com/Ford-Standard-Box-Electrical-Terminal-16-14-Gauge-p/a16348.htm

These terminals are used all over the truck so would not be a bad thing to have some on hand regardless.
