While my truck is at the muffler shop I asked the guy (a family friend and mega motor head) to double check everything while its 5 foot off the ground and easily accessible. Well... apparently I have the wrong fuel pump; great!!!! That explains why I have broken 2 of them!!!! So, the Carter fuel pump aka Chinese Look alike is a bit out of spec.....the canister seam is directly in-line with the oil pan lip, which causes the pump to be out of alignment and it will not go home: hence the 1/8" gap that he noticed on the bottom of the pump. We pull it and run down to the local parts guy (not a box store) and we dig thru multiple catalogs... Eventually we come up with a pump that does not have the canister on it.... So, tomorrow around 2 we will find out if that one will work!!!!
What did you guys use for a mechanical pump on a 76 F150 460????
Well... after trying 2 additional fuel pumps we have decided to just block off the manual pump and go with a low pressure/high volume electric pump. that will feed the Edelbrock sump pump.
I had a 76 E350 van with a 460 & C6 and I don't remember any canister on it's fuel pump.
I cant remember now if the pump body was up or down but may want to look into that pump.

Yeah, I have a 77 F250 with a 460 / C6. Neither the one that's on there now (don't know if original) nor the replacement from RockAuto have a canister on it.
