The two 2.5" pipes between the headers and Y pipe are pretty long and would provide plenty of space for resonators. I think I'll stat with installing them with clamps and see what happens. If I like it I may just leave everything else alone and have them welded. If not then I'll replace the muffler also. I really appreciate all the helpful input.
On our 96 4.9, we have the stock resonator & muffler, but the previous owner removed the cat. Its quiet at idle & cruising on the highway. When you floor it, it sounds beefy, but like a UPS truck coming down the road kind of beefy.
Im tempted to experiment in the next month with a quality resonator & no muffler to see if it will give off a better tone because I really enjoy that Cummins sound that some of the guys have going on with their 4.9s
Edit: After posting this I had another thought. Currently I have about 10" of 3" pipe between the Y pipe and muffler. Now I think I'll relocate the Y pipe forward enough to allow for the resonator to fit between the Y pipe and the muffler and use one instead of two. The link above is for the 2.5" but they also have a 3", which is the one I would use.
