Okay well i just put in a flowmaster muffler and a tip. cant really hear anything unless your at idle. i just wanted to make sure i have my facts right. a catback is one muffler and two pipes heading out of it? dual mufflers mean that the truck has two mufflers comming out of it? right? the local guy here said he can do a catback for $350 and was talking about dual for $450. im guessing $450 is a good deal if its only a hundred more for adding another muffler. thanks
catback exhaust is any exhaust the attatches after the catalytic converters. it doesn't matter if it's dual pipes or not. there are 3 popular ways these usually go.
1 pipe into muffler, 1 pipe out of muffler

exhast is split, and each side of engine gets it's own muffler and exhaust pipe.
1. the $350 quote is for a single pipe catback exhaust. basically he's going to cut your 3 foot stock muffler off, and weld in a new "performance" muffler with a little pipe
2. the $450 quote will have the guy "Y-ing" out your exhast and installing all the associated piping to have 2 seperate exhaust tips. 1 pipe into a muffler, 2 pipes leave the muffler
$450 for a custom dual exhaust isn't bad, it isn't the best of prices either. I paid $479 (shipped) for a Magnaflow stainless steel dual exhaust. I had to install it myself though. It all depends on how mechanically competant you are.
sorry about the product images, I had a hard time finding suitable images to demonstrate what I was talking about. btw, I highly recommend Magnaflow.
wow thanks for the detailed answer. im bookmarking this post. so what is it called when you put the mufflers before the catalytic converters? is that louder?
yeah rodneysch, exactly how i was looking to get mine done. also, i see some trucks with dual exhaust and their left pipe is swinging around when they drive. do the auto techs that install the mufflers put some kind of brace to make sure that doesnt happen? or do they leave the pipe as it is like that?
if the exhaust shop is any good at all, they'll install enough hangers to keep them from sliding around while driving.
just go out into the bay when they're doing the work. and tug on the pipes after the install is done. if they move more than an 1" or 2", they need more support
I don't think there's any real difference in sound between the dual exit of single exit. My single magnaflow can make just as many heads turn as a dual setup could, most people don't believe it's a single until they look at it. It has a nice deep sound. Dual mufflers would be a waste, and how is exits is totally based on your opinion of appearance. I really didn't want a hot tailpipe that close to the rear brake hose, and also didn't want to get "exhausted" hooking the trailer up, so I went with the single, and I'm glad I did. It can make just as much noise as duals.
