This may be the wrong forum but here goes. SInce I have decided to keep the Y block 272 and it's distinctive wrap around crossover exhaust pipe. I was thinking about leaving the crossover and running back to a muffler , one of those one inlet , two outlet jobs to give me faux duals. Anybody have any ideas about size of exhaust pipes to run and choice of muffler?
Bubba - I'm not that familiar with the exhaust pipe setup you describe.
Selecting the exhaust pipe size and the routing will depend on the performance you are looking for. By Y-ing in and out of a common muffler, you'll create some restriction there. If your truck is a cruiser, it doesn't matter much and the shared muffler will knock more sound out of the system. 1 3/4 - 2" dia pipe should be fine.
If you want to enhance the performance (by 25+ hp), use straight pipes, a cross-over tube between them nearest the header exit, individual mufflers (I love Flowmasters) and exit either out the sides (my preference) or back. Exiting out the sides is loud, out the back quiets things to a nice rumble. 2 1/4 - 3" dia tube would be great for this setup. The larger the tube, the lower the tone.
Good Luck.
Sorry Randy Jack, but I must interject something here. My muffler guy told me that my idea of putting on larger diameter pipes would rob my 289 of torque. Also, I would vote for Magnaflow instead of Flowmaster. They have a lifetime warranty and I think they sound better than Flowmaster. Bubba, I have not seen the muffler you speak of, but I know that my old 91 Chrysler Labaron had a y piece that bolt on coming out of the muffler. Maybe that would accomplish what you want to do. JMHO, John
I was thinking 2 1/4 or larger, just wanted some confirmation. The truck will only be a cruiser and the y block produces torque in volumes especially with the 3.92 rear end. Off to the exhaust shop ! More $$$
On my 54 Merc car (with the original? 256 cu in eng) I removed the crossover pipe, blocked the opening on the pass side, and had a dual exhaust system made using 2 inch dia pipe with smithys glass pack mufflers. I like the sound when it warms up.
By the way I did the same thing in 1957 to my first 54 Merc. I know it's not as pretty as headers or rams horn exhaust manifolds but it works for me.
I have a 302 with headers and dual glass packs and I love the sound. I bought a pair of those Thrush turbo tubes which are basically a fancy name for glass packs. The also don't take up much space.
