Now the story. Buddy of mine helped me replace the drag link on my truck yesterday. For what’s it worth he was a professional mechanic and has restored a couple muscle cars. Replaced drag link, centered steering.
Truck drove well and it seems to have solved the problem of some steering wandering.
So coincidence on the ABS light or did we some how jar something loose while working?
I appreciate any advice on how to troubleshoot this.
Since you have a 2002, you most likely have 4 wheel ABS. I would first check the sensors and wires on the front hubs and then maybe give the VSS on the rear differential a good look over. If you don't find anything obvious, we can go with testing of the wires, circuits and other various bits and bobs from there.
Yes it has 4 wheel ABS. I can see the wiring going to the front wheel knuckle/bearing area. Also see sensor on top of the rear differential.
Nothing obviously hanging loose but I didn’t open the wire protector to check. I see the ABS control unit in front of the drivers side battery, not a good spot to work if necessary.
This came up yesterday afternoon and I don’t have a way to read any codes . Don’t know what type of scanner can read those?
I will go back outside when it warms up and crawl under truck again and recheck what I can see.
You can set up your phone with FORScan Lite, purchase an OBDII wireless dongle, and read the ABS codes. Details in my signature under OBDII tools. I currently have a C1230 ABS code I'm trying to diagnose, that is pointing me to the rear axle sensor and related wiring.
Well update not good news.
Was headed to autzone short distance away to see if I can get codes read. Heard bunch noise from front end and it appears passenger front wheel brake locked up. Going to get toweld to mechanic buddy.
I dealt with an intermittent brake lock up this past fall in the mountains of TN. Rotor was 806* when I had a chance to check it out. I had a caliper piston that would get stuck only when moderate braking with the 5th wheel attached. Was a bear to identify.
Keep us updated and we will be standing by to help in any way we can.
If servicing the front brakes I'd suggest new hoses if yours are OEM.
Autozoo reader prolly will not help, these trucks are not fully OBDII compliant so their code reader can't, um, read. The best rig these days is an android device (cell phone etc), Forscan, and a decent bluetooth OBD adapter.
I doubt the drag link work has any bearing on the other issues.

The combination of ABS error and noises leads me to believe your unit bearing has failed.
Well it is definitely a bad wheel bearing.
I should have picked up on that but with my terrible hearing and the noise of the 7.3..
My buddy is swamped and hasn’t been able to fully take it apart so I’m hoping nothing else is damaged. On top of this I had a bad experience with the tow truck driver.
I will update when I get more info.
Actually lucky nobody got hurt.
I am interested in the Forscan and I assume it will work on my IPhone XR. Minor concern is my computer knowledge is from the early 80’s, I can struggle with new stuff LOL.
I appreciate everyone’s input.
Well update.
Had both bearing/hub replaced. Passenger side was toasted. Should have caught that. Combination of my bad hearing and the ABS light threw me off.
Getting a new tire as precaution since one has damage from skidding. Truck drives pretty good but now has a mild pull to the drivers side when braking medium from freeway speed.
I am sure this is the classic slide pin issue but it was not there before this happened. Also getting a wheel alignment. Long over due and was going to get one before this happened,
I will address the brake pulling issue going forward, think I can do that myself.
Thanks Joe
If the vehicle pulls to one side when braking, the other side brake is in need of inspection.
If the vehicle pulls to one side when driving normally, that side brake is in need of inspection.
You said the passenger side was toasted and if the truck is pulling to the driver side when braking... Well... There you go... The hubs/wheel bearings were replaced, were the brakes serviced or anything in the braking system replaced?
I recently had a 806* reading on my driver side brake after it seized up hauling my 5th wheel. I replaced everything from the hoses, calipers, pads, rotors and fluids. Brakes work like a champ now and I am happy to have confidence in the system.
