The noise started about 3 years ago, when the engine was COLD but once the truck ran for 10-15 seconds, the noise settled down and stopped. A few days ago, it stopped settling down and is now noticeable even while driving.
I stuck a screwdriver to the valve-cover and tried to take a listen and with my novice mechanic ear Im pretty sure its coming from cylinder 7 or 8.
Ill add a video I took from my phone. If anyone has experienced this themselves or has any ideas, please let me know Id be grateful.
I just did an oil change today about 300 miles prematurely and substituted the MMO for the 7th quart because I had read some good stuff through google about. Hopefully it helps, thanks for the reply.
It's worse because it's been driven on for 3 years. The more you drive it, the worse it gets. Possible stuck lifter/roller/follower and top end issues not getting the oil it needs. If the cam phaser and timing are off, you run into even more serious issues. No additive will help or solve these issues. You either fix it, or run into worse issues down the road.
My engine threw no 8 roller out on one of the intake valves . The drivers side valve cover is easy to get off , you can pop rollers out .The roller bearings are probably shot on at least one . I would change them all on no 7 and 8 ,if they damage cam when thrown that will be a bummer.
^^^^^ I believe he's right no liquid is going to repair it now. MMO is a preventive not a fix . Me I would do an engine flush just before pulling it open just to make it easier to see stuff .
I had the same thing, stuck followers, scored the cam. I tried MMO in the beginning, but it's not gonna do any good. The more you run it the more you are grinding the parts down, bits of metal getting into the oil. The parts aren't too expensive, it's the labor that's the pain.
