I know it isnt a very desirable swap.
My dad has a 2002 2wd with a FRESHLY rebuilt 4.6 motor. The transmission is now busted, and the rest of the truck is in rough shape (farm truck that is surprised it holds together).
He has as an opportunity to purchase a 2005 4wd with a busted 5.4 (but everything else is great) for cheap.
Is it possible to simply pull the 5.4 and drop in the 4.6? I didn't see any write-ups but from what I've read......it should be fine.
Your working with two different series of trucks. The engine may bolt up but it's the electronics {computers, wiring harness, etc} and matching transmissions that need to be thought about. You'll definitely have to do a lot of research unless someone here has done it before.
Lots of little bits have to change. The intake and throttle, for starters, as the new body ‘04-on use electronic throttle versus cable.
I’d find some other use for that 4.6 and get one that came from an ‘05 (or as close a year as possible) hopefully with all the goods in place to where you should be able to pop the computer in place and plug the harnesses in and go.
