I am making a lot of changes to my truck. I am studding the truck and redoing the High pressure system, also putting a 6” lift kit onto it along with a set of 37” X 14.5 tires on a set of new 20” rims. My truck is a Harley Davidson Edition so it came stock with 20” wheels. I will be needing to calibrate the Speedo on it, so I am looking for sing suggestions on what tuners will recalibrate the Speedo and have the monitor with it. I was looking at the Bully Dog but would like to hear what others use.
Bullydog/SCT, same company, and the best way to go. Depending on the year model of your truck, speedo correction is achieved in 2 different ways, so make sure you get the correct electronics to do it. In the 03/04 trucks you have to have something to flash the ABS module. I'm not sure how the 05-7 trucks do it.
Believe you can do this for FREE using FORSCAN (other free tools also avail at places like github, sourceforge, other developer sites) -- you'll need to calculate tire size/settings manually (others like Hypertech, other tuners do it for you -- but most, if not all of these tuners violate federal, state and local laws and environmental / pollution laws--- they just "dance" around the laws and are a real problem for the air Americans, Canadians, etc are breathing).
The manual calculation and value upgrade (programming) will work and get your mph working properly and your trans shifting as Ford intended.
If your engine is stock as it seems to be, I would use Forscan to correct your speedometer and stick with Ford tuning. If you significantly modify your engine then I would recommend custom tuning on a chassis dyno. Remember Ford already tuned this engine, the manufacturer (International) built a 250hp engine that Ford tuned to get 325hp in the F-250 & F-350. The stock International versions of these engines did not have near the amount of head gasket issues that the Ford tuned ones did. BTW, even Ford did not tune these engines when installed in the F-450 and larger chassis. Good luck, Russ
P.S. If your intent with the studs is to prevent head gasket issues, you will also need o-ringed heads. Plenty of stock engines with studs installed have had head gasket failures and the problem can get worse with aftermarket tuning.
I would go with the SCT if you want the extras. Also your not as likely to find any doing the EGR Delete that much anymore
do to the FEDS raking them over the coals if they even get a hint they are doing them.
As for head gaskets prep is 75% of the work. A lot are going with the O-ring heads and that is what I will be doing in a few months
when I put my engine back together.
Thanks for the all the info. As for the heads I have already ordered them, they will be here tomorrow. I should be done with the project by the weekend and then I am off to Florida to buy a car for my son. I will list pictures of the truck when I am done. But if others have opinions on the tuners please post. That is the only thing I haven’t bought yet since I can get it in 2 days.
I use either my SCT X4. Or VXDIAG VCXNano with ForScan. Or you can use one of "their" versions of IDS... Either one will allow you to modify and monitor. But the latter option will allow you to change As-Built data too as well as an oscilloscope if you need to watch a sensor's input or what have you. Among many other features. But, that being said. The aforementioned tuner may cost more, but you'll be able to slap a tune on it as well...
Also you can make up custom gauges using verified PIDs using SCT's Livewire software. You can set limits when it will go from green to yellow and finally red when it's reached a parameter outside the zone you set. Quite detailed... There's a guy on eBay selling lightly used un-married and un-locked X4's that haven't been updated yet. So you can still kill the EGR.
