I just bought a 2002 F350 with 169k on it. Previous owners spent a lot on repairs, new starter, water pump, fuel pump, etc. It's pretty much stock. They added a aftermarket trans. cooler. Transmission fluid changed 25k ago. It has not done extensive heavy towing from what I can gather from Carfax. I'm wondering about how many miles I have left before the $4k bill comes due. Any ideas?
You are quite correct, rebuilding a transmission is not a backyard job. A clean, well lit, warm, indoor location with generous bench space is preferred. Russ
P.S. Lint free towels are a big plus
I ran a:
'99 7.3 to 200k with no trans issues
'03 6.0 to 230k with no trans issues (I did have to replace the trans oil cooler lines, but the transmission was fine)
'04 6.0 to 180k with no trans issues (this one was a dually and pulled both a 42' toyhauler around the state every summer, and a 44' front living room Jayco Pinnacle several times)
I either sold or traded in all of these trucks. The transmission is not the weak point behind either of those motors.

The '03 and '04 had a 5R110W transmission. Totally different from the '99 to '03 4R100 transmission.
My F250 was an old fleet truck owned by a grain elevator. They towed gooseneck trailers with it. Assuming its the original transmission it has over 260,000 miles now. Everything looks untouched so I think it's original. I just changed the fluid and filter and removed lots of metal shavings from the pan. Shifts fine, no issues.
