I did a fluid change in my 1990 E4OD last year using the instructions in the link above. I was at about 80K miles and I doubt the fluid had ever been changed. At least it has not been in the 10 years I have owned the RV.
Note that it is not sufficient to just drop the pan and call that a fluid change. There is vastly more fluid in the transmission than what is in the pan. You'll need 18 quarts or so to do a complete change-out.
I used Motorcraft Mercon V from the Ford dealership.

I sourced my Mercon V from the dealership also---was almost $2 LESS per quart than NAPA ect---the better brands IOW. If you talk to your dealership they're able to order ATF and motor oil in the 5 gallon bags in a box which is quite a bit more environmentally sound than 18 or so single quart plastic bottles. Storage shouldn't be an issue with degradation of the product assuming the containers are kept closed.
For years I did the pan drop, new filter and refill to spec level---since becoming a Ford owner and reading Mark K's various posts and watching his full fluid exchange I'll never return to the pan/filter and 5 quart change. I have one transmission done just 16K miles ago, that's about 4 years ago. I'll repeat the full fluid exchange at 50K miles but honestly I don't think the van's transmission will last until 326K miles.
I also have a rebuilt 4R75E in another van that will be completely flushed somewhere between 30K and 50K without hesitation. My rebuilder suggested I use his supplied unbranded ATF to which an additive could be added making it completely compatible as Mercon V; While I trust him without much doubt I opted for the "real stuff".
