Have an AOD in my truck needed to rebuild it, a sales guy is saying I can use a E4OD kit for a rebuild is this true?
isn’t the pan bigger on the E4?
what would you recommend for a kit? From who?
Drive train is 5.0 (250+or-hp)89 AOD from a e250 van, my truck weighs 3300#
The AOD will NOT have an electronic controller, but WILL have TV cable or linkage which must be adjusted properly for the trans to operate correctly. (No TV adjustment can lead to a quick trans failure.)
Anyway, once you are certain what you have you can order parts from that Charlie Tranny link or search for parts from other sources.
If you are questioning what parts to replace, you might be better letting a shop handle the rebuild. Buy a overhaul book if you are going to attempt yourself. For something of that age, I would replace all the soft parts (clutches, bands, seals). A box kit will handle that, raybestos is what I use. I order for a supplier but you can find the kits through summit racing. For a daily driver, I would not suggest the race frictions, regular is fine. If hard parts are worn you will typically find that in the teardown. Your best bet, visit a local shop, they will sell you what you need as far as parts. You will need to buy a clutch pack compressor and some lip seal tools. Depending on your AOD, it may have cast drums, you really should have special seal installation tools for those to avoid cutting the seals, although it can be carefully done without them. Those tools are basically extinct and expensive. Good luck with the project.
