Pulling Engine Tips

Hey all. I'm pulling my flathead V8 from my 45 Ford in order to do some welding where the steering gear connects to the frame. I haven't pulled the motor since I was a kid. Any advice on where to or NOT to connect the chains to pull the motor. I was going to just pull off some of the head nuts and connect the chain diagonally in order to balance the engine. Any tips to avoid troubles would be appreciated. I'll post some fun pics. too

Cheers,

Dave

I have pulled the engine from these jailbar trucks at least a dozen times. The entire front clip, even with the radiator still in it is so easily removed that I just undo the few bolts and myself and a helper grab a wheel well and walk it off the front. Now you can easily clean (and weld) the frame and firewall. And the engine going back in is a dream compared to leaning over those fenders. Just a thought.

Got the front clip off. I'm just now trying to get the pin pulled from the clutch assembly where it connects to the trani. Any suggestions? I beat on it with a hammer and it started to mushroom. So need another plan.

That pin should have a cotter pin at the top, so you should pull it out rather than drive it in.

I just read this:

also: https://fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=245375
The ones that I have dealt with have all had a cotter pin in the clutch shaft.
