If I am correct the whole front end unbolts so you can take the motor outy. With the vans it is easier to unbolt the trannys from the block because of the doghouse.
Remove the grill, radiator, a/c condenser, bumper, front fascia (under the grill) and anything else I'm forgetting (it will be obvious what has to come off) off. Then take the upper intake off. Slide your engine hoist (cherry picker style) in on top of the lower intake, bolt a short chain from one corner of the head to the opposite corner of the other head and lift it up just enough to clear the motor mounds (about 4 or 5 inches) then CAREFULLY remove the engine through the front. It's not nearly as difficult as it sounds or looks. I've met cars that were more difficult to get the engine out of.
I had to do a 4.9 in my '81 a few years back here are the notes I took and posted here a few years back;
If your van is equipped with the 4.9l 300ci six as in mine you're gonna have a handful! First, remove the; hood, horizontal radiator support, fan shroud, radiator, grille, and lower wind deflector (below the grille). This wind deflector seems to be easily removable but be careful because there's two nut/bolts in the lower corners where it attaches to the left/right fenders. NOW strip off the air cleaner, carberator, vacuum lines, throttle cable assy. and all frontal belt driven accessories. (Alternator, power steering pump , air pump for the emmissions equipment, water pump & fan, disributor, plug wires, and exhaust pipe at the collector. There may be one or two things I'm forgetting but my project had been four weeks in duration as I can only break from work on Sundays. Now a word on engine cranes, if you can obtain one via borrow or rental your gonna want the lowest height crane obtainable on account of the terribly short clearance there is going to be between the valve cover and the cowling in the moter nacelle. In our case we had to raise the van on all four corners 11 inches for my buddies motor crane to get the correct angle. At one point I was ready to buy his crane and saw the legs off of it. I cannot stress this enough, BE PATIENT this will be a pecker to remove and install. THis is primarily due to the higher profile of the 300 six in comparison with V-8's Good luck man.
