First (and hopefully last) time I did it was back in school driving a classic rust bucket 74 Nova; it, too, had a straight six. I can still see the bit falling down to be caught by the throttle only to slide past as I tried to extract it. Broke a stud or two trying to get the manifold off, and some how got the bit out. Unfortunately, damaged everything up so badly, the manifold never fit right again and air got sucked in everywhere. No worries though. Converted the automatic choke to a manual with cable and "adjusted" the mixture more or less continuously as I drove.

Then there was the time when the only way I could make her run was to disconnect a single plug wire, but that's a different story.

I am often amazed how old, simple engines can run when so badly treated.
