bought a 2013 F250 and it only came with 1 key. i want to get some spares made and the locksmith told me it could run upwards of 400 per key and i figured that the dealer would be worse. i would be fine with a basic key no fob/unlock buttons as long as it would not set the alarm off when used to unlock the truck. Can the alarm be disabled completely? last truck did not have alarm. where is the best place to get spare keys? is 400 a realistic number?
You can buy 80 bit Ford security keys off eBay for less than 10 each....sometimes i have seen then for like 2 for 12 or 15 dollars....you can get the cut at your local locksmith or hardware store for a few dollars each (no programming)....you can buy a bluetooth OBDII adapter, install FORScan on a laptop and then program your keys.
The lock/unlock buttons a fob (not one of the IKT's) are a separate function that is not based on a key being programmed into PATs. When you program an IKT it usually programs the buttons on the fob also.
IKT - Integrated Key (has chip and luck/unlock and maybe remote start buttons)
I have had luck programming additional keys when just having one, the key is to make sure the one you have isnt programmed to set you seats and stuff when you hit the button, go thru the process in the owners manual and reinsert the same key as if you had two.
Forscan process is probably much easier, also if it was a used truck the old owner can stalk you and come take the truck for a ride, probably drop some french fries between the seat and console, you know, that black hole you can NOT get to.
Here are listings on eBay for the IKT's. You have to select the one you need as some on remote start, some have cargo door opener and some are just 3 buttons
