Ugh. I had Ford send me the map update for $40. Loaded to truck. Wouldn’t take. After three phone calls to Ford and many master resets, and reloads, they figure out I need to update to Sync 3.4. Mind you THEY sent a custom USB to me with the map update after checking their files.
I downloaded the Sync update to USB. Uploaded to the truck. No issue there. Reloaded the map update. No problem. However, if I press the voice command button on the steering wheel, and try to enter a street address or POI, it locks up for 30 seconds, and goes back to the Home Screen. Phone connectivity stinks. Often I get poor connections, or it cuts out, and often the electronic witch in the dash cuts out when talking.
I’ve been on the phone with Ford several times. Their “special” IT department was to call me back and never has. Now they want me to go in and see a dealer. They say if it’s locking up, it’s a screen issue. BS! It’s a programming issue! Clearly the screen doesn’t die from an update! It’s something with voice command and now my Sync is useless and I’m out $40. Any recommendations? Thanks!
I guess the only option you have at this point is to take it in for warranty work. I have a 2019 and I did the map update and it seemed to work fine for me. although it took a lot longer than stated by Ford.
good luck.
If you check out some of the recent threads (they're a page or two back now), there are known issues with Sync 3.4 and older radio units. Something about the new software doesn't like the older hardware (yes, it's a programming issue, but they don't have millions to test it out on, just a few). Some guys have had their stereo brick and lock up, some guys took their trucks in and the dealer had the stereo brick and lock up. Both scenarios lead to a new radio under warranty.
New APIM on the way. Can’t figure out how plugging in a USB to do an update killed the screen, but, okay. Thanks for all the replies!
Glad to hear that you’re getting a new APIM.
Hopefully they’ll upgrade it to the latest and greatest SYNC 3 version for your year and model. When I had mine replaced months ago, I received a map upgrade but it was nothing to brag about because the maps are still out of date.
Perhaps they’ll also do the map update for you as well so you won’t have to use that map update from Ford. Just check the map version on the SYNC 3 screen after the APIM is replaced.
I don’t think plugging in your USB to do an update killed your screen.....sounds like bad luck or Murphys Law.
