1 Gear shift Problem

Hello folks

I have a 97 F350 Powerstroke. I have owned it for 6 weeks, everything is running fine, other than, what seems to be normal shifting of the truck, shift from 3 to 4, 1-2 seconds later lockup, 4 to OD shift , then lockup.

I pulled my 9000 lbs boat home for the year, steepest grade 6%, did fine, pedal was to the floor. Parked boat and went to store the truck was shifting out of first at 2400 rpms, much higher than normal for city driving. Jumped in the truck the next day and it would not shift out of first, I could feather the throttle and it would hard shift to 2nd at about 2400 rpms, all other gears fine. I can start out in D, once the rpms get to 2300ish, I can drop it to 2nd and it shifts, then put it in D and all good

I will be starting the diagnostics this weekend. I also have the Forscan adapter on the way.

Thanks in advance for your help.

That's too many gears. You have a four speed transmission, unless someone retrofitted some other transmission. If so, what transmission was it? And what's controlling it?

Your trans should shift 1-2, then 2-3, then lockup, then shift 3-4 and relock. Fourth gear is overdrive. There is no gear higher than fourth gear.

Once you have Forscan read the codes. That's the place to start. Without codes, all I can tell you is that something isn't right.

I ran the scan and the only code was P1211. I would assume my next avenue is to make sure all the values are correct.

I see a bunch of stuff I can add to the dashboard, such as TCC% (no value indicated), TFT, VSS, TR_V (no value indicated) not sure if the computer on my truck is advanced enough to use all the options of the software.

What do you think I should monitor/look for? I am changing the fluid, it has more of a red brown color, but does not smell burnt, I have drained it yet, just the smell form dip stick.

Thank you for your help.

TCC% will show you the duty cycle of the torque converter clutch solenoid. When it reaches 100% the converter should be locked. If you can read a parameter called SLIP_ACT that is an actual reading of torque converter slip. If it's less than 15 RPM the converter is locked.
Also, look at GR_CM. That is the gear that the PCM is commanding to the trans. GR_RAT (I think that's the spelling) will show the measured gear ratio through the trans.

I am not able to find a ACT_Slip or any reference to torque converter slip , bummer i would like to know as the as the TCC % always reads 0. I sent an email to Forscan to confirm if the 1997 can read this value.

What i did find is the GR_CM , I also loaded the SS1 and SS2 and found the following . In OD the SS1 is always on, when the GR_CM changes from 1 to 2, both sift solenoids are on. I cannot tell if the tranny shifts, but it is slipping, I can get on the throttle, RPM goes to 2700 and the truck does not accelerate. When the GR_CM indicates 3, I fell the shift, rpm go down and SS1 is off and SS2 is on.

When I use manual shifting, once I select 2nd, both shift solenoids are off, the tranny still slips, select OD and the SS2 is on, SS1 off and i am in 3rd all runs smooth from 3 to OD.

The TR_V when on OD always reads 2.11, but when manually selecting gears it reads 4.42 in Park, 3.62 in reverse, 2.85 in Neutral, 1.39 in 2nd and .69 in first . I believe all these are within spec.

CSS Coast solenoid is always on, i would assume it should be off until i let up on throttle.

1st 2.71, 2nd. 1.58, 3rd 1.00 so the PCm is telling it to get the gear and is measuring the correct ratio. As mention when the gear and ratio is in 2nd, the tach stays the same as if in first. so it seems it is either not locking up our the tranny is slipping.

I have not cleaned all the wiring harness connectors yet. This is on the list for this weekend.

When towing the boat home, I ran up the hill in OD and then manually down shifted as needed I ended up in 1st at about 18MPH.

Thank you for help.
