Carburetor gray substance

My 61 292 has taken a turn for the worse. It will only run with the choke fully closed..it ran great until recently. I removed the carb, and there is some type of gray substance in the fuel bowl. It is almost like wet gray paint, or anti sieze compound. I wonder what would cause this? Thanks..

Aluminum oxide. Are you using fuel with ethanol? Corn gas has a high water contend and will corrode all of the metal parts in a fuel system. Ethanol will also attack rubber and plastic parts. Newer vehicles are designed with this in mind but it is best to find a source of non-ethanol fuel for older cars and trucks. 91 octane non-ethanol is common here in Missouri but some states don't allow anything but E-gas.

Thanks..I do use the premium non-ethanol fuel. It is almost like the fuel bowl is melting..I guess just clean, rebuild, and drive on. Thanks for the input. I just have never seen anything like this before.

There are opinions that the culprit is not the ethanol but some other additive (contaminant) such as MTBE.
It is concerning to see crap in the carb but I've not seen it cause a real problem. Perhaps the particles are fine enough to pass through the carb's passages. I usually use alcohol-free 94 in my FE with AFB; I haven't had to look inside it lately, so I don't know if the grey crap is there, but I do know that the fuel evaporates quickly and it can be hard to start if not used regularly.

Could be lead additives to modern fuel.

Yabut they don't add lead to modern gasoline.

I'm betting on small amounts of moisture causing corrosion of the alloy castings. Can even become porous. Ethanol's hygroscopicity (there's a 4 dollar word for ya) is well known. It absorbs water out of the air. I try to use ethanol-free gasoline mostly, especially if it's going to sit. I also dose the fuel in the tank with Marvel's which seems to coat parts, modern gas is "dry" I think.

But some folks do add lead additive to save those valves.
