Hubcap restoration
I finally got my hubcaps completed. First I sandblasted them, then primed with a good primer. Then I painted them with an amazing wheel paint I got at Home Depot by Rustoleum. It sprays on just like metalflake paint. Then starts the tedious procedure of masking off the areas for black paint accents. There is definitely a learning curve here. It gets easier as you go. I hand painted them and they aren't perfect but I assure you from 6 feet away they look perfect. Remember the factory ones weren't perfect either.

Wow those look great. I love those little types of crisp projects that really make a truck pop. Yeah anything original from the factory seems like they used some kind of funky quick mask that always left overspray around the edges of everything painted with an accent like that.

Thanks guys, yeah HIO, you and your posts were the inspiration for me to give it a try. I'd like to come up with a couple of templates to make this job quicker. I'm sure the factory didn't do this by hand. They must have had some type of automatic process.

This is a five year old thread. But I will answer you. He started out with Ford painted caps. Back then, Ford had both painted and stainless caps of the same style.

Thanks for responding JEFFFAFA, I was just curious as I am at that stage with a restore on my 76 F250. I wasn't aware that these hubcaps were ever made in steel. I am getting my S/S caps redone to get out dings/dents, but I will have to paint the black highlights and was curious if there was some special surface prep necessary prior to painting. My fingers are already cramping from just thinking about taping the highlights off for paint, so I'd really prefer to not have to do this twice because I missed a "prep step" the first go-round..
